The CBCs parliamentary bureau in Ottawa is looking for an energetic and forward-thinking associate producer to take on an important editorial role in the Ottawa bureau assigned to the program Power & Politics. In this role you will have the opportunity to work with top-tier Canadian journalists.

While this is primarily a television production job a comfort level with all media lines is essential. You will also have experience executing social media strategies to help expand the journalistic footprint of Power & Politics beyond the traditional media platforms and outside the programs two-hour daily broadcast. You will have the ability to write and/or create digital and radio content generated from Power & Politics.

The hours of work will be Monday to Friday alternating between 11 a.m. to 7:15 p.m but are subject to change due to operational requirements.

The Role:

With direction from the Senior Producers the Associate Producer will participate in the production direction and/or postproduction of Power & Politics. This may include chasing guests researching stories graphics creation and video editing. There is a requirement to develop meaningful stories and contacts. There is often a requirement to co-ordinate with the activities of others for the production of this material. Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies practices and standards but initiative and independent judgment are required.

Key tasks:

  • Contributes ideas for program content; participates in the preparation of the program.

  • Assists in developing program content including writing researching and/or editing (text graphics video).

  • Obtains and organizes technical and production resources required by the program.

  • Prepares scripts; ensures adherence to the style and format of the program.

  • Organizes the participation of interviewees creative contributors and other participants develops background introduction and line of questioning conducts or arranges for any necessary research and ensures the briefing of the host.

  • Maintains contact files.

  • Processes invoices and obtains authorizing signatures as required.

  • Participates in the evaluation of all aspects of the production.

As required performs the following tasks:

  • Produce program elements;

  • Edit and mix or direct the editing and mixing of audio and/or visual elements;

  • Write continuity edit text;

  • Write online stories based on program material

  • Edit encode digitize and package audio and video material for a website;

  • Perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the program.

You possess:

  • Job requires a university degree or equivalent

  • Job requires a minimum of 2 years of experience in broadcasting or a closely related industry

  • In depth knowledge of national news

  • A thorough passion for knowledge and understanding of Canadian politics and its place alongside both American and wider international political issues

  • Solid journalistic skills

  • Excellent production skills including graphics creation

  • Previous experience working in a national or local newsroom in daily news

  • Demonstrated ability to develop meaningful stories and develop contacts

  • Knowledge of and ability to file online stories and use social media to communicate content

  • Understanding of CBC News and the parliamentary bureau

  • Ability to coordinate newsgathering and rollout with other platforms

  • Ability to write clearly and concisely.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience creating digital-only editorial content and working in a cross-media multi-platform programming environment considered an asset.

  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings overtime and weekends as required.

  • Ability to participate in a highly creative and collaborative team in a dynamic work environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to take direction and work cooperatively within a small production unit.

  • Demonstrated judgment tact and diplomacy.

  • Ability to take initiative be proactive and work independently.

  • Ability to work in a high pressure tight deadline environment without sacrificing creativity or quality.

  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and to respond to many competing demands in a short space of time.

  • Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot in fixed time environments.

  • Bilingualism (English and French) considered an asset.
