Position Information
The Honolulu Emergency Services Department (HESD) is looking for aVehicle Inspector to support the departments vehicle fleet by performing mechanical inspections for preventive maintenance and repair work on various vehicles including ambulances SUVs light duty trucks and associated equipment
As a Vehicle Inspector your duties and responsibilities will include:- Performing mechanical inspections for preventive maintenance daily repairs and regular maintenance work of various existing and new vehicles including ambulances and associated equipment using appropriate checklists and procedures.
- Ensuring vehicle and equipment are in regulatory compliance and equipped within contract specifications.
- Mechanical inspections including but not limited to field test breaks steering and suspension mechanisms engine performance clutch gear shifting panel instruments troubleshooting electrical problems recharging of A/C systems and gages.
- Coordinating with departments for specific and routine maintenance and repair work of the Administration and EMS fleet.
- Reviewing fleet repair history to identify vehicles with frequent or repetitive repairs and/or premature failures.
- Providing recommendations to improve unit availability based on user application and cause of system and/or component failures.
- Operating an EMS automotive support vehicle to respond to field trouble calls and performs minor repairs in the field or in shop as necessary.
- Performing other duties and responsibilities of the position.
Special Work Requirements- Ability to work on standby shifts on daily weekends and holidays when called upon.

At time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show demonstrated competence in performing the journey level duties of a Fleet Mechanic III or equivalent.
Experience must have included the repair and overhaul of complex hydraulic and electrical systems on a variety of heavy vehicles such as dump trucks truck tractors and/or refuse trucks.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
1. An appropriate valid drivers license.2. An appropriate valid commercial drivers license with proper endorsements prior to completion of probation.
3. A current State Department of Transportation medical examination certificate prior to appointment.
4. A certificate approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the servicing and disposal of refrigerants as required.
The above license and certificate must be maintained on a current basis thereafter as a condition of employment.Examination Process
