Job Summary:

The Department of Student Affairs at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Assistant Director of Career Planning and Development.

The Assistant Director of Career Planning and Development will oversee career counseling and residency advising initiatives for medical students. This position is responsible for providing support for early career exploration specialty exploration mentorship advising resources research and networking opportunities guidance on residency applications and relevant programming for students from their first to fourth years.

The Assistant Director will support the development of the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) letter to enhance the chances of medical students successfully matching into residency programs. The role ensures that medical students have the resources and guidance needed to make informed decisions about their medical careers.

Additional responsibilities will include:

  • Manage and implement career advising content into a cohesive curriculum (class meetings small group sessions drop in webinars workshops advising session etc. throughout the four-year medical school educational program
  • Organize workshops and presentations for career advising specialty exploration and residency application such as CV writing workshop and alternative careers night
  • Provide faculty development and support for all advisors including specialty advisors early career advisors and clinical advisory deans
  • Coordinate and provide training to students and faculty on AAMC Careers in Medicine Programs.
  • Organize and implement the early career advising program. Organize small group and specialty information sessions for medical students in the preclinical years regarding specialty career choices and directing them to research opportunities
  • Liaise with the Alumni Association to recruit and engage alumni mentors in the career advising program
  • Liaises with Student Center staff to provide guidance for the Medical Student Interest Groups.
  • Follow emerging data trends to create new career and medical specialty advising services.
  • Collaborate with the Student Affairs team to organize major events such as Residency Match SOAP Orientation Week graduation ceremonies and various Medical Student Life events.
  • Track and analyze student specialty interest and ultimate career choice during medical school.
  • Develop assessment tools to continuously assess the efficacy of career services and programing
  • Support the development of the MSPE letter to facilitate medical students successful match into residency
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders (e.g. education leadership faculty clerkship coordinators and students) to collect organize and synthesize feedback on student performance via well-written comprehensive and accurate narratives.
  • Work with medical students to identify their noteworthy characteristics and help craft and edit to ensure accuracy honesty and impact
  • Identify opportunities for improvement of MSPE preparation processes and procedures
  • Develop and manage online resources to support students career exploration and residency application process including content for the website maintain a library of career advising resources and update the calendar of events.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree
  • 3 to 5 years of experience working in higher education
  • Ideal candidates should have prior experience working with medical students and/or residents providing oral and written feedback on performance and synthesizing information
  • Proficiency in composing editing and synthesizing feedback into accurate and impactful narratives for student performance evaluations
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to present effectively in both small and large groups
  • Competence in gathering managing and reporting large amounts of data accurately using electronic systems
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups including students faculty and administration to collect feedback and communicate updates and processes clearly
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks meet deadlines and keep stakeholders informed of progress
  • Ability to identify opportunities for process improvements related to MSPE preparation and the initiative to develop and implement effective solutions
  • Strong organizational ability to coordinate student programs and events
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word Excel Outlook PowerPoint Banner Leo Brightspace (Desire to Learn) and Panopto
  • Or an acceptable equivalent combination of experience education and training to the above

Commensurate with experience and qualifications
