The Opportunity
WSDOT is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Bridge Engineer 6 to join our Bridge Preservation Office (BPO). In this critical role you will serve as a registered professional engineer responsible for the oversight and management of bridge records both electronic and hardcopy in alignment with federal regulations American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials standards and WSDOT policy. Your work will directly support the safety and reliability of Washingtons bridges and tunnels by ensuring inspection data is accurate current and easily accessible for use in the states bridge and tunnel programs. This position plays a vital role in fulfilling WSDOTs mission to provide a safe reliable and cost-effective transportation system. Our top candidate possesses strong organizational skills a deep understanding of engineering principles and has a commitment to data integrity and public safety.
What to Expect
This position performs field work that includes working at heights exceeding 100 inside confined space environments over waterways outdoors with exposure to inclement weather and frequently traverse uneven terrain. A typical schedule for this position is Monday Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role the Coding & Appraisal Engineer will:
- Serve as the statewide specialist for bridge data.
- Be responsible for the storage flow and security of computer-based information.
- Develop test and implement statewide server applications
- Serve as the manager of the Washington Bridge Information System (WSBIS) direct its usage and provide support for its users.
- Be responsible for the analysis maintenance integrity and security of WSBIS; for the publication of the WSDOT Bridge list (M23-09) and submitting the WSDOT data to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) National Bridge inventory (NBI).
- Provide training for BPO inspection software.
- Be responsible for the management development and testing of applications; coordinate overall project development monitoring and documenting development progress.
- Serve as a Senior Lead Bridge Inspector including bridge program management functions inspection planning and preparation bridge inspection inspection equipment operation and inspection report preparation.
- Perform standby/on-call emergency response up to 2 weeks a year or as required.
- Operate equipment necessary to complete inspections (i.e. UBITs boats man lifts handheld power equipment).
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity the following are required:
- A bachelors degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- Licensed by the State of Washington as a Professional Engineer in civil mechanical or electrical engineering; or be ability to obtain licensure in Washington State within six (6) months of employment through comity.
- Ability to obtain a valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform work that includes traversing rough steep and uneven terrain.
- Ability to work at heights exceeding 100 inside confined space environments and over waterways.
- Ability to respond to and report to the assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an event.
- A valid unrestricted drivers license.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Four (4) years of experience as a senior lead bridge inspector (Bridge Engineer 5) or equivalent.
- In depth knowledge of the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) andNational Tunnel Inspection Standards (NTIS).
- In depth knowledge of WSDOT inspection program policies and procedures.
- Certified as an FHWA Lead Bridge Inspector in Washington Stateor the ability to obtain within 6 months of appointment.

Important Notes
- The salary range listed includes the legislative approved general wage increase of 3% effective on July 1 2025.
- This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options.
- Statewide overnight travel is an expectation of the position and may be required on a regular sporadic or as needed basis.
- This position is eligible for an addition 10% assignment pay while either operating an Under-Bridge Inspection Truck (UBIT) from the bucket or while serving as back-up operator on the bridge deck for a minimum of four (4) hours per working day.
- This position requires a Professional Engineers License issued by the State of Washington. Incumbents will be expected to obtain a WA State PE license within six (6) months of appointment.
- In addition to base salary employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type duties or location of the position. For union-represented positions more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
