In 2019 Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge and made a commitment to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. We invited others to join us and there are now more than 300 businesses and organizations across 51 industries and 29 countries that have signed the Pledge which means we are collectively coming at the climate crisis from nearly every sector and nearly every angle.

As part of our efforts to decarbonize our business we became the worlds largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy in 2020 and last year we reached 85% renewable energy across our business and are on a path to power our operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025.

A day in the life

Our SDE develop large data models for clients in energy renewable resources sustainability and water sectors enabling them to assess their portfolios. They help our data scientists create predictive models to enhance decision-making.

Key job responsibilities
As an Software Development Engineer in the AWS Sustainability Technology Organization you will design and implement scalable software solutions that power AWSs sustainability initiatives. Your responsibilities include developing and maintaining software services APIs and backend services that process large volumes of environmental and operational data. You will work with data scientists and data engineers to software systems focusing on carbon footprint calculations energy efficiency metrics and sustainability reporting tools.

You will architect and build components of our sustainability data platform and developing self-service interfaces for internal customers. You will also contribute to our transition from legacy systems to modern cloud-native architectures while ensuring reliability and performance.

Your work will include writing high-quality well-tested code participating in code reviews and mentoring junior engineers. This position requires strong problem-solving skills and the ability to balance immediate operational needs with long-term architectural goals.

About the team
The AWS Sustainability Technology Organization (STO) develops solutions to drive AWSs ambitious sustainability goals. We create advanced analytics tools and data-driven platforms that empower AWS our customers and partners to make informed decisions for improving the environmental impact of cloud infrastructure and services. We focus on integrating sustainability metrics across AWS operations from energy procurement to carbon footprint tracking. Our work directly contributes to AWSs commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions and supports our customers in meeting their own sustainability objectives.

- 3 years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2 years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language

- 3 years of full software development life cycle including coding standards code reviews source control management build processes testing and operations experience
- Bachelors degree in computer science or equivalent

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $129300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $223600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge skills and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered equity sign-on payments and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package in addition to a full range of medical financial and/or other benefits.
