Job Description
We are seeking experienced per diem medical-surgical certified nursing assistants (CNAs) to provide high-quality patient care at the Medical Center. CNAs in this role will work in medical/surgical inpatient units assisting registered nurses (RNs) with direct patient care and ensuring patient safety. They will perform a wide range of clinical and supportive tasks including personal care diagnostic support treatment procedures and monitoring patient conditions.
NOTE: CNAs in this per diem role will serve as backup staff working on an as-needed basis with no guaranteed hours. Shifts may vary including days nights weekends and holidays based on operational needs.
Skills/Experience:
- Minimum two years of CNA experience with at least six months in an acute care medical-surgical unit.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision referring to RNs when deviations or issues arise.
- Experience in monitoring patient conditions assisting with diagnostic procedures and responding to emergencies.
- Strong team collaboration skills to support RNs physicians and other healthcare providers.
Required Skills:
- Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) including feeding walking dressing turning lifting and hygiene care.
- Take record and report vital signs and changes in patient condition (e.g. diabetic coma insulin shock gastrointestinal hemorrhage).
- Assist in diagnostic procedures including lumbar punctures liver biopsies and bone marrow examinations.
- Prepare and transport specimens to the laboratory while ensuring proper labeling.
- Perform infection control procedures including care for patients in isolation.
- Assist in oxygen therapy suction therapy chest therapy and postural drainage.
- Provide basic life support (BLS) measures as needed.
- Document patient conditions and assist in completing admission histories.
- Conduct inventories upon patient admission and as needed.
- Perform contraband searches and ongoing safety evaluations in mental health units.
- Escort mental health patients to and from appointments.
Desired Skills:
- Experience in both inpatient medical/surgical and mental health settings.
- Strong understanding of universal precautions infection control and patient safety protocols.
- Ability to work in high-acuity settings responding quickly to patient needs.
- Knowledge of VHA and AVAHCS regulations for patient care and safety.
Degree Requirements:
- No formal degree required.
- Must have completed a state-approved nursing assistant training program.
Certification Requirements:
- Current CNA certification from any U.S. state.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
- Acceptable alternative certifications:
- Patient Care Technician (PCT) Certification/License
- Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) Certification/License
