DESCRIPTION
- This is an unclassified non-career position. Non-career employees are allowed a maximum of 1600 work hours available over a 12-month period. Non-career employees are not typically eligible for health/dental/vison benefits; however may be eligible for sick leave benefits. This is an at-will temporary part-time position.THE DEPARTMENT
Long Beach Utilities provides safe clean reliable and affordable water gas and sewer services to the Long Beach community. The service area supports 500000 customers represented by 90000 water accounts 145000 gas accounts and 90000 sewer accounts in 52 square miles. This service area includes Long Beachs downtown core waterfront accounts suburban areas and dense multifamily portions of the region. The department also provides natural gas service to residents and businesses in the City of Signal Hill.Water.Every day Long Beach Utilities treats 32 million gallons of drinking water at the Long Beach Groundwater Treatment Plant (GWTP) and distributes this water after blending with imported water to 90000 households and businesses throughout the City of Long Beach. The GWTP also hosts a California Environmental Laboratory Accreditation as a Certified Water Quality Laboratory which performs 60000 to 70000 water quality testing to ensure the high quality of the drinking water.Gas.As a municipal utility Long Beach Utilities natural gas rates and policies are established by the Board of Utilities Commission consisting of five residents of Long Beach. The City Charter requires Long Beach rates to be comparable to the rates charged by surrounding gas utilities for similar types of service. In the region the Southern California Gas Company is the only other natural gas utility providing similar service and serves as the market benchmark. The City of Long Beach natural gas service territory includes the cities of Long Beach and Signal Hill and sections of surrounding communities including Lakewood Bellflower Compton Seal Beach Paramount and Los Alamitos.Sewer.Long Beach Utilities owns operates and maintains over 700 miles of sanitary sewer lines safely collecting and delivering over 40 million gallons of wastewater per day to the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County for treatment.To learn more visit.THE POSITION
The Long Beach Utilities Department has an immediate opening for an Accounting Clerk II - Non-Career in the Finance Division. This position is a non-career part-time unclassified position and will work at the Gas Campus located at 2400 E Spring St Long Beach CA 90806. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
The Accounting Clerk II-NC will perform the following duties:
- Maintains accounting records (e.g. Accounts Payable Grants Accounting CIP or Billing) utilizing one (1) automated accounting system or subsystem which requires on-the-spot independent decisions for on-line data entry;
- Prepares assembles tabulates and verifies bills vouchers invoices requisitions and purchase orders;
- Reviews analyzes and may interpret reports;
- Trains and/or explains accounting procedures and financial information;
- Researches projects and reconciliations;
- Prepares basic/standard journal entries and makes accounting allocations;
- Maintains subsidiary ledgers;
- Collects and accounts for cash receipts;
- Collects data for project billings;
- Prepares purchase requisitions for major construction contracts;
- May perform the duties of the Accounting Clerk I level;
- May assist in preparing budget;
- May provide support to Accounting Clerk III;
- May direct Accounting Clerk I and/or other clerical personnel;
- Performs other related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE
- MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Option A: One year of recent clerical accounting experience;OR
Option B: Business education which includes successful completion of one or more courses in each of the following: elementary accounting or bookkeeping; office machines; office practices and procedures;
OR
Option C:Any combination of the education and experience stated above totaling one year.
One year of education equals 24 semester units/36 quarter units from an accredited college or university. (proof required)*

- Experience with financial systems and software;

- Ability to interact with vendors using courtesy and tact;
- Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills;
- Strong attention to detail;
- Basic Excel knowledge.
