The Environmental Specialist II position is located within the Septic Unit of the Environmental Compliance Branch of the Solid Waste Section in the Division of Waste Management. The position is based in Raleigh and is responsible for permitting of septage management firms and for compliance with the septage management laws and rules. The Environmental Compliance Branch has the responsibility to assure that solid wastes are managed in a responsible consistent manner to protect public health and the environment across the State. The Septage Unit is responsible for the septage management program with major areas of focus that include permitting and inspections of septage management firms and facilities septage management compliance and training development and maintenance of applicable laws and rules for septage management and providing technical assistance to septage land application sites septage detention and treatment facilities and septage management firms as well as associated compost facilities. The Branch is also responsible for determinations of wastes and by-products that can be land applied for beneficial uses and of the best management practices to be followed for each by-product to assure protection of public health and the environment.

The Division of Waste Management:
The primary purpose of the Division of Waste Management is to protect the public health and environment through assuring that solid and hazardous waste and underground storage tanks are managed properly and existing contamination is cleaned up across the State of North Carolina. This is accomplished through the Hazardous Waste Solid Waste Superfund and Underground Storage Tank Sections and the Brownfields programs. To qualify for this position applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL the following:
Management Preferences:
Bachelors degree in one of the agricultural biological engineering environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
