JOB SUMMARY:
The Safe Schools Specialist consults with the Director of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Prevention Services to oversee and direct the Salt Lake City School Districts MTSS framework which includes providing evidence-based structures to support the implementation of positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) in schools and coordinating the districts Safe Schools process. The Safe Schools Specialist builds and provides relevant training to district employees. This position is responsible for ensuring student behaviors are handled in an objective fair consistent and equitable manner while minimizing the loss of instructional time and supporting their social and emotional well-being.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors degree from an accredited college/university.
- Valid Professional Utah Educator Licenseor a valid Educator License from another state that is transferrable.
- Professional communication skills including but not limited toexcellent written and verbal communication skills in English; confident articulate and professional speaking abilities; and empathic listening and persuasive speaking skills.
- Previous teaching or counseling experience in K-12 education.
- Experience in working with students directly in addressing a wide range of student behaviors.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Spanish Speaker: speaks reads writes and understands spoken Spanish.
- Have an ESL endorsement or will obtain one within 4 years of hire.
- Demonstrate professional collegial and appropriate interactions throughout the work environment including interactions with juveniles and their family members.
- Experience in working across diverse populations and cultures.
- Experience in public educations settings with elementary middle and senior high school students.
- Experience supporting individuals with behavioral and affective disorders.
- Knowledge of effective English Language Learners teaching practices; student social-emotional learning accelerated/extended learning programs and special needs students including laws and regulations of special education and 504 plans.
ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Works with the Director of SEL and Prevention Services in coordinating the districts safe schools process.
- Consults with school administrators on investigations of incidents and to ensure that appropriate action is taken at the school level and/or pertinent referrals are made to the district.
- Facilitates administrator and family intake meetings.
- Collaborates with translators and interpreters when needed.
- Supports schools in implementing safe schools outcomes and interventions
- Provides written communication of safe schools outcomes to families and district administrators
- Works with outside organizations to complete appropriate safe schools referrals.
- Participates in school and district meetings as needed especially as they relate to high-level behavior incidents or support.
- Designs and delivers professional workshops and in-services to support a consistent and thorough safe schools process.
- Collaborates with other district departments specially building leadership Special Education and MTSS/Behavior Specialists to ensure safe schools process is efficient and consistent from beginning to end.
- Supports schools with site level discipline meetings.
- Engages with Director of SEL and Prevention Services in implementing other elements of the district MTSS framework.
- Responsible for compliance with federal and state laws State Board of Education administrative rules state assessment polices Salt Lake City School District board policies and supervisory directives.
- Responsible for compliance with all requirements of State Board of Education Rule R277-530 Utah Effective Educator Standards at all levels to teacher development.
- Responsible for compliance with all requirements of State Board of Education Rule R277-515 Utah Educator Professional Standards.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements in an efficient and effective manner; required to attend activities events and meetings outside of normal work hours on a regular basis.
- Maintain professional workplace etiquette and represents the department/district in a professional manner; communicate effectively and efficiently with diverse groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and positive working relationships with co-workers students parents and other district employees.
- Demonstrates adaptability and understanding of cultural differences in working in a diverse environment while coping with stressful situations related to students and maintaining confidentiality.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective operations of the school.
WORK ENVIRONMENT& PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Risks found in the typical work environment which is adequately lighted heated and ventilated e.g. safe use of office equipment avoiding trips and falls observing fire regulations.
- Driving to work locations.
- Typically the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work: however there may be some walking standing bending carrying light items etc.
