Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 32 local health districts. These entities work together to promote healthy lifestyle choices that can combat chronic disease educate the public about emergency preparedness and threats to their health and track disease outbreaks in Virginia.

Make a Difference as a Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Nurse

As a Maternal and Child Health (MCH) nurse you have the unique opportunity to transform lives in your community. Specializing in healthcare for mothers infants and children you will focus on:
Prenatal postpartum and pediatric care to ensure the health of both mothers and children
Promoting child health equity
Education prevention and treatment to improve health outcomes and reduce maternal and child mortality rates in the HPHD Community
Essential skills and qualifications include having an active unencumbered nursing license strong communication skills confident and knowledgeable in obstetrics pediatrics and neonatal care and the skills and ability to build an outreach program to serve the HPHD community. The idea candidate will be a great collaborator with exceptional interpersonal skills in working with community partners and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
The incumbent independently provides professional nursing care to patients in clinics homes and schools and other community or congregate care settings. Performs nursing assessments may perform lab tests take measurements develop and implement care plans including the administration of medication and case management. Participates in public health emergencies and community health assessments. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a RN by state code. May supervise support staff.

Makes independent nursing assessments and judgments daily in clinics and on home or community visits regarding case management and public health nursing practice. Seeks supervisory guidance in policy change/interpretation or other complex situations.

This is a restricted position which is solely funded by the Maternal Child Health (MCH) Services Title V Block Grant for a one-year period ending June 30th of each year. The availability of funding is scheduled for review annually and periodically thereafter. Employment is contingent on the continued availability of grant or non-general funds.

The successful candidate may receive a one-time lump sum of annual leave.

The Virginia Department of Health offers 12 paid holidays medical dental vision and life insurance retirement plans (including 401(a) Cash Match and 457 Deferred Compensation Plan) as well as sick family/personal and annual leave.

The VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B measles mumps rubella and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap)vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current years seasonal influenza vaccination.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires licensure as an RN in Virginia or compact state. If a new graduate must obtain RN license within 90 days of the date of hire or subject to termination per the regulations governing the practice of nursing. Requires BLS certification. Requires adherence to all safety policies including a review of immunizations driver safety policies and all other state policies.

Communicates verbally and in writing to analyze problems situations and suggest solutions leadership follow directions and establish priorities
Skills in physical examination health assessment and interviewing and counseling technique
Ability to function independently prioritize and organize work solve problems adapt to change function as a team member and relate to the public
Knowledge of public health concepts principles of public health nursing principles of epidemiology; immunizations; basic nursing science medical terminology case management
May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required
Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CP

Additional Considerations

Additional study in health promotion/or public health is preferred
Experience in a public health setting or one related to disease prevention and health promotion
