F.H. Collins Secondary School is currently seeking a passionate educator to join our dynamic learning community. F.H.C is a dual-track English/French Immersion school serving approximately 780 students in grades 8 through 12. We provide students with a diverse range of academic athletic performance outdoor/experiential trades and arts programs. We are proud of our strong academic programming cultural diversity and commitment to meeting the needs of all learners.

Located in the capital city of Whitehorse Yukon F.H.C sits alongside the Yukon River on the traditional territory of the Kwanlin Dn First Nation and Taan Kwchn Council. Our school continuously works to honour First Nations ways of knowing doing and being and we value our deep connections with families and the broader community.

Position: Learning Assistance Teacher (grades 8-12)

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Please clearly demonstrate on your cover letter and resume how you meet the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor of Education with a Masters degree or specialization in special education
  • Recent experience in secondary education
  • Experience providing leadership case management and instruction as part of a multi-disciplinary school-based team regarding programing for students with diverse learning needs and behavioural challenges;
  • Experience developing co-ordinating implementing and revising Individual Education Plans Student Learning Plans Behaviour Support Plans and Safety Plans to maximize student potential;
  • Recent experience with differentiated instruction and principles of inclusion
  • Demonstrated success with instructional coaching or teacher mentoring

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND SUITABILITY:

Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:

  • Extensive experience and success working with and supporting students with learning difficulties
  • Knowledge and experience in integrating technology into learning
  • Ability to adapt teaching strategies and resources to meet students individual learning styles and needs
  • Proven experience and competency in assessment for learning
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Yukon First Nations cultures and the diverse backgrounds of the student population
  • Classroom experience with co-teaching models
  • Training and experience in administering and interpreting standardized psychometric assessments
  • Recent experience using competency-based instruction and evaluation
  • Demonstrated superior planning and organizational skills
  • Experience within the last three years identifying and implementing targeted literacy and numeracy interventions or co-ordinating implementation of literacy and/or numeracy interventions
  • Excellent communication (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills with proven ability to work positively and collaboratively with students parents school staff leadership and the school community
  • Demonstrated ability to differentiate and explain instruction using current competency-based assessment curriculum pedagogy and practice;
  • Ability and interest in working to support whole school goals beyond the classroom (e.g. sports experiential opportunities clubs)
  • A knowledge of and sensitivity to the culture and aspirations of First Nations people of Yukon and a culturally diverse student population
  • Proficiency in French may be considered an asset
  • Experience using First Nations ways of Knowing Doing and Being to support and instruct students academically socially and behaviourally;
