TITLE Multilingual Language Learner (MLL) Teacher

REPORTS TO Building Principal

POSITION SUMMARY

The Multilingual Learner Specialist (ML Specialist) is under the direction of the Building Principal. This position requires the employee to identify eligible MLLstudents organize and deliver appropriate instruction to all proficiency levels partner with and coach general education staff to help with implementation of ELD strategies in order for students to master WIDA standards monitor newly exited MLL students (Transitional level) and coach plan with and support classroom teachers to recommend strategies or interventions as appropriate advocate for students and facilitate parent engagement efforts and activities.

The classroom teacher under the direction of the Building Principal will create a program and class environment favorable to learning and personal growth of students which facilitates student success in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district-approved curriculum; motivate students to develop skills attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation in life and establish good relationships and rapport with students parents and staff members. The teacher will document student progress activities and outcomes; address specific educational needs of students; and provide feedback to students parents and administration regarding student progress expectations and goals. The teacher will maintain professional competence through in-service education coursework and professional growth activities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Valid teaching certificate for the State of Washington with required endorsement in area of assignment
  • Possess a ELL endorsement and an ESL and/or Bilingual endorsement
  • Experience teaching elementary ML students or recent training and/or knowledge regarding English language acquisition evidenced-based practice around ML support and instruction
  • Experience with ELD GLAD and/or Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) components
  • Training or experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse students and families
  • Experience with student-centered coaching collaborative planning and adult learning principles
  • Experience with managing state-mandated testing for ML students (WIDA)
  • Preferential consideration given to those fluent in Spanish
  • Prior experience in the school setting preferred
  • Such other qualifications as the Board and Superintendent may find appropriate

Per MSD CBA:

Elementary ML Specialists will provide coaching to help support and facilitate classroom instruction. Each elementary ML Specialist shall be responsible for assisting general education teachers with differentiating and scaffolding lessons for MLs observing and coaching general education teachers in English Language Development (ELD) strategies and presenting ELD strategies / ML differentiation strategies at PLC meetings. Coaching may be provided through observations professional development online modules help with lesson planning and scaffolding and modeling instructional strategies.

Secondary ML Specialists will meet with administrators prior to the end of September to develop a work schedule that provides ample time for them to engage in their duties. Each secondary ML Specialist shall be responsible for assisting general education teachers with differentiating and scaffolding lessons for MLs observing and coaching general education teachers in ELD strategies and presenting ELD strategies / ML differentiation strategies at PLC meetings. Coaching could be provided through observations professional development online modules help with lesson planning and scaffolding and modeling instructional strategies. ML specialists may also teach newcomer classes.

Special Requirements

  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint clearance
  • I-9 employment eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act
  • HIV/HBV training (obtain within 60 days of hire date District provided)
  • Human Resources new hire training (obtain within 60 days of hire date District provided)

  • Abides by employment provisions provided for in the collective bargaining agreement
  • Observe strict confidentiality regarding student information
  • Maintain regular punctual attendance
  • Perform all duties in accordance with applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements
  • Communicate effectively with students parents and staff
  • Work with minimum direction but as an effective member of the team
  • Identify potential ELL students and administer the placement test to determine eligibility
  • Organize and deliver appropriate ELL instructional curriculum to help K-5 students successfully meet academic standards
  • Foster English language acquisition and enhance academic progress
  • Communicate with classroom teachers regularly and participate on building teams and/or committees
  • Provide classroom teachers with support and appropriate strategies and ELP standards to use with ELL students in the general education classroom
  • Provide on-going professional development for SIOP instructional strategies and ELP standards
  • Organize and support state-required testing
  • Maintain files with required paperwork for each student in the ELL program
  • Provide District ELL office with updated student information as requested
  • Complete and distribute all necessary ELL forms
  • Participate on the child study team or multidisciplinary team when a student in the ELL program is discussed. Share information on assessing and serving ELL students with special needs.
  • Provide ways to involve parents in school events; advocate for English language learner parents/students
  • Willingness to work in a co-teaching model

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.

This is a sedentary position with light work that involves sitting a portion of the time but does require walking and standing for extended position requires accurate perception of sound near and far vision depth perception; handling and working with

educational and psychological materials; and providing highly technical oral and written information and reports.

The job is performed with the majority of the time spent indoors and under minimal temperature variations; a portion of the day will be time spent outdoors and is subject to a variety of changing weather conditions and potentially uneven/slippery surfaces.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS

This position is that of MLL teacher and is represented by the Monroe Education Association collective bargaining unit. The position will work a schedule in coordination with the District student calendar. Salary and benefits as determined by the current collective bargaining agreement. Employees are required to complete all mandatory district trainings.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES

The classroom teacher shall be evaluated by the Building Principal according to currently established district procedures and evaluation criteria. The process shall include an evaluation of the employees performance of the above position responsibilities.
