Overview

The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at Childrens Mercy offers innovative treatment and support for children with seizure disorders and their families. Each area of our clinic from theEpilepsy Monitoring Unitto theKetogenic Diet Program has dedicated staff members who specialize in that field. The patients team members may include:

Epileptologists (child neurologists who specialize in epilepsy)
Neurosurgeons
Neuropsychologists
Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs)
EEG and radiologic technologists
Nutrition and dietary specialists
Social workers

The clinincal services RN will coordinate bridge the gap and oversee all clinical care needed for our epilepsy patient population outside of clinic visits.

  • Scheduling and coordination for patients who are transitioning to a ketogenic diet
  • point person and care coordination between Epilepsy division/Neurosurgery/Surgical Services for all VNS needs including everything from initial placement to ongoing management to recalls to emergent replacements that are needed for battery issues.
  • EMU stay coordination once the Neurophysiology administrative staff schedules the EMU stay.
  • This includes pre-stay phone calls and consults to determine medical needs during stay determination for appropriate placement between the CMK EMU and AH EMU and preparing the patient and family for what to expect during their stay so that they are prepared when they arrive.
  • Confirmation calls for AH EMU and KS EMU (1x/week) - these calls include asking all clinical questions and completing the clinical form in the EMR.
    • Point of contact for all EMU patients for questions about stay or medication management/wean for their stay.
  • Review patients that have been scheduled at the KS EMU and prioritize AH EMU patients.
  • Manage and enter all admit orders for EMU to both med/surg as well as PICU. Point person and coordinator for First Time Seizure Clinic including identification of appropriate patients scheduling and attending clinic when it occurs quarterly.
  • Function as point person for the HSS and admissions as it pertains to AH EMU admissions and changes that may need to be made.

New employees must be willing to be vaccinated if found non-immune to measles mumps rubella (MMR) and chicken pox (varicella) and/or without evidence of tetanus diphtheria acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccination since 2005. If you are selected for this position you will be asked to supply your immunization records as proof of vaccination. If you and have any concerns about receiving these vaccines medical and/or religious exemptions can be further discussed with Human Resources.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes the nursing process to develop and implement a comprehensive plan of care for the patient/family which promotes optimal patient outcomes.
  • Serves as a clinical resource for the education and consultation needs of the health care team.
  • Meets the educational needs of patient/family utilizing principles of teaching/learning.
  • Supports program and services
  • Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree Nursing degree program and
    • 1-2 years experience pediatric nursing experience
  • Associates Degree Direct care nurses hired after September 1 2013 without a BSN must complete their Bachelors degree within 5 years of their hire date and
    • 1-2 years experience pediatric nursing experience
  • One of the following: Licensed RN - Kansas Registered Nurse Multistate License Kansas required upon hire
  • One of the following: Licensed RN - MO Registered Nurse Multistate License Missouri required upon hire
  • Refer to Nursing and Advanced Practice Provider Licensure and Certification policy for required Life Support Certifications Required Upon Hire
  • Specialty Certification relevant to units patient population (determined by Nurse Manager/Director) Preferred
