Purpose of Job
Under general supervision performs duties relating to fire safety and code compliance which includes new construction inspections special event inspections notifying commercial property owners of code violations educating the public on codes issuing summons and compiling records.
II. Essential Job Duties
A. Conducts Inspections of Property
- Conducts technical inspections throughout the City to discover and eliminate potential fire and safety hazards in schools day cares businesses hospitals manufacturing facilities and other institutions which includes determining the adequacy of means of egress fire sprinklers and fire alarm systems. Determines occupant loads.
- Conducts or initiates necessary inspections related to the issuance of certificates of use and occupancy. Has the ability to read construction plans and determine required elements are provided. Work closely with the Codes inspectors in the acceptance of new buildings.
- Notifies property owners of fire code violations explains necessary corrective measures and ensures that corrections are made within the specified period of time. Operates computer to enter retrieve review or modify data.
- Issues citations and appears in court as required.
B. Limited Review of ConstructionPlans
- Reviews sprinkler system inspection reports for deficiencies prioritizes corrections and ensures compliance. Conducts sprinkler inspections and witnesses testing of fire protection equipment as assigned.
- Performs limited reviews of sprinkler construction and planning documents.
C. Public Service
- Conduct fire safety drills at schools city facilities and commercial businesses.
- Initiates community outreach programs and works with local businesses relative to permit issuance hazardous materials control reporting storage etc.
D. Attends Training to Maintain and Learn New Knowledge and Skills
- Attend conferences and participate in professional associations; stays abreast of national trends and techniques relative to fire protection and life safety issues. Attends training seminars to maintain necessary certifications. Studies reference matter and codebooks for updates and code changes.
III. Other Job Duties
Performs other job duties as assigned including:
- Conducts virtual meetings inspections telephone and e-mail correspondence.
- Maintain a close working relationship with other members of the Department and City staff on fire protection and code enforcement issues.
- Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Responsible to carry a department-issued phonewhenever off duty and return to duty as needed for code enforcement and/or emergency response consistent with Departmental Policy.
- Subject to perform all functions of a firefighter withinprevious training level.
IV. Primary Job Challenges
Primary challenges of this position include evaluating information and construction sites to ensure compliance with codes. In addition explaining to contractors why corrections are needed and ensuring code compliance.
V. Equipment Operated
Capable of operating a variety of information technology devices portable radio valve keys and an A-frame ladder.

Has thorough knowledge of the policies procedures and methods of the Department firefighting practices and fire code laws and ordinances as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Fire Inspector. Has extensive knowledge of modern fire suppression and basic emergency medical principles practices and equipment. Has extensive knowledge of the geography of the City and is able to carry out complex oral and written instructions. Has the ability to drive fire station vehicles and operate firefighting equipment. Is able to deal with the general public in a diplomatic and fair manner. Is able to maintain good physical conditioning in order to perform strength and agility tasks. Is able to develop and administer operations staff plans and objectives for the expedience and effectiveness of specific duties of the department. Knows how to operate various equipment as required in the completion of daily activities. Has the ability to perform duties necessary to promote the safety and welfare of the general public. Is able to react quickly and calmly in dangerous and emergency situations. Has the ability to comprehend interpret and apply regulations procedures and related information. Is able to use independent judgment in a wide array of circumstances from routine tasks to extremely critical situations. Has the ability to work in stressful high-risk conditions.
Language Skills:
Ability to read analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers regulatory agencies or members of the business community. Ability to write reports. Ability to effectively present information to middle management public groups etc.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts interest commissions proportions percentages area circumference and to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. In decision making some choices are known while others may need to be identified. Some reliance on precedent. Ability to interpret a variety of complex instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form.

VII. Physical Demands and Work Environment
Physical Demands: Performance of the essential duties of this job requires the incumbent to:
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
- Frequently moves about inside the office/building to access file cabinets office machinery the public etc.
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery such as a calculator copy machine computer printer and telephone. (laptop tablet cell phone)
- Regularly positions self to maintain the office area and items needed to complete daily tasks.
- Regularly communicates information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
- Occasionally moves/transports up to 50 pounds.

The work environment is moderately noisy (examples: business office with computers and printers light traffic) though occasionally loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department large earth-moving equipment) during fire alarm testing.
VIII. Qualifications
Education and Experience: The required knowledge skill and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus one to two years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Certifications/Licenses:
- TN Fire Inspector Certification within 12 months of hire
- Maintain a valid Tennessee Drivers License or equivalent.
- Maintain all current emergency medical certifications.
Preferred Certifications Training and Experience:
- Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator or equivalent.
- Firefighter II certification.
- Fire Officer certification.
- EMT AEMT or EMT-P
- ICC Fire Inspector I or equivalent
- ICC Plans Examiner
