Purpose of Job
Under general supervision performs duties relating to fire safety and code compliance which includes new construction inspections special event inspections notifying commercial property owners of code violations educating the public on codes issuing summons and compiling records.

IV. Primary Job Challenges
Primary challenges of this position include evaluating information and construction sites to ensure compliance with codes. In addition explaining to contractors why corrections are needed and ensuring code compliance.
V. Equipment Operated
Capable of operating a variety of information technology devices portable radio valve keys and an A-frame ladder.
VI. Key Competencies Required
Has thorough knowledge of the policies procedures and methods of the Department firefighting practices and fire code laws and ordinances as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Fire Inspector. Has extensive knowledge of modern fire suppression and basic emergency medical principles practices and equipment. Has extensive knowledge of the geography of the City and is able to carry out complex oral and written instructions. Has the ability to drive fire station vehicles and operate firefighting equipment. Is able to deal with the general public in a diplomatic and fair manner. Is able to maintain good physical conditioning in order to perform strength and agility tasks. Is able to develop and administer operations staff plans and objectives for the expedience and effectiveness of specific duties of the department. Knows how to operate various equipment as required in the completion of daily activities. Has the ability to perform duties necessary to promote the safety and welfare of the general public. Is able to react quickly and calmly in dangerous and emergency situations. Has the ability to comprehend interpret and apply regulations procedures and related information. Is able to use independent judgment in a wide array of circumstances from routine tasks to extremely critical situations. Has the ability to work in stressful high-risk conditions.
Language Skills:
Ability to read analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers regulatory agencies or members of the business community. Ability to write reports. Ability to effectively present information to middle management public groups etc.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts interest commissions proportions percentages area circumference and to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. In decision making some choices are known while others may need to be identified. Some reliance on precedent. Ability to interpret a variety of complex instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form.

The work environment is moderately noisy (examples: business office with computers and printers light traffic) though occasionally loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department large earth-moving equipment) during fire alarm testing.

Education and Experience: The required knowledge skill and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus one to two years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
