Provides technological support for the Anesthesiologists in the delivery of patient care for surgical anesthesia and anesthesia care for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. In these areas the anesthesia technician is responsible for ensuring that the technology of the anesthesia is available and to assist the anesthesiologist in the application of the technology.

One of the following must be met:
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: Must have a current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider Card. Certified as an Anesthesia Technician preferred.
Primary Source Verification (if applicable): Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to remain calm in a fast-paced or stressful environment. Ability to handle multiple tasks with frequent interruptions. Must possess organizational abilities. Requires the ability to work well with all levels of patients and the public as well as other Health Care Professionals. Must be self directed and able to work independently. Must be able to communicate effectively with people of variable cultural and educational backgrounds. Basic knowledge and understanding of: General adult/pediatric anesthesia regional anesthesia malignant hyperthermia latex allergy difficult intubations and all emergent/ non-emergent airway devices pressure monitoring equipment and all applicable devices laryngoscope blades IV fluids & IV tubing. Basic understanding and knowledge of equipment: Anesthesia Delivery System H.P. Monitors respiratory gas monitors blood/fluid warmers bair huggers IV infusion pumps syringe infusion pumps peripheral nerve stimulators stimuplex stimulators transport monitors transesophageal echocardiogram probes fiberoptic laryngoscopes Doppler O2 jet ventilators steris and autoclaves. Basic knowledge and understanding of all drugs frequently used by the anesthesiologists and ability to locate any drug rapidly if necessary
OTHER:
Contacts: Constant interaction with anesthesiologists O.R. Charge Nurse O.R. Circulating Nurse and members of the anesthesia care team. Ability to deal with physicians hospital staff employees and visitors in a tactful and diplomatic manner.

Frequent standing walking bending crouching stooping. Frequent lifting/moving patients. Intermittent lifting moving or carrying pushing or pulling up to 50 lbs. Frequent use of finger/hand dexterity. Constant reaching with hands/arms. Frequent talking or hearing. Corrected hearing and vision to normal range. Exposure to blood body fluids or tissue. Possible exposure to infectious materials communicable diseases and/or other conditions common to a healthcare environment. Intermittent exposure to risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Moderate noise level in work area. Requires work under stressful conditions deadlines or irregular hours. May be required to take call and/or work weekends/holidays based on the needs of the department.
RESPONSIBILITIES % OF TIME
1. Implements patient care by assisting MDs as directed during induction of anesthetic (general and regional) and/or other agents and with difficult intubation/airways and any other emergencies responds to MD directives as directed during perioperative phase communicates patient information to the appropriate persons and accounts for equipment and supplies used in patient care.

2. Provide equipment and assistance to anesthesiologists in off-site locations (MRI suite CT Scan Cardiac Cath Lab DDUC) for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Assure anesthesiologists have clean functioning equipment and all necessary supply items throughout the day.

3. Use good aseptic technique when in O.R. rooms or around sterile field at all times. Maintain clean and disinfect equipment e.g. anesthesia supply carts machines monitoring equipment pumps fluid warmers bair huggers fiberoptic scopes laryngoscope blades handles stylets TEE probe and LMAs

Ordering and receiving/stocking supplies and stocking adequately and per par-levels: anesthesia supply carts anesthesia delivery systems anesthesia workroom pediatric cart malignant hyperthermia cart/tray difficult airway cart arterial cath trays stimuplex block tray bier block tray and emergency pressure monitoring equip

5. Report and malfunctioning equipment and / or supplies to Bio-Med Lead Anesthesia Tech. Or Anesthesia Coordinator appropriately.

6. Starting IVs under request of the anesthesiologist initiating the fluid only if a Licensed Nurse. 10%

7. Performs clinical preceptor role for anesthesia techs -collaborating with the anesthesia coordinator.
