Senior Writer Marketplace

Please note there are two full-time positions and there are strong internal candidates.

Your role:

Marketplace Canadas award-winning investigative consumer program is looking for two great senior writers to join our team of experienced journalists and innovative storytellers.

If youve got the ability to find stories beyond the headlines juggle multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment an obsession with getting the facts right and the passion to dig deeper into the biggest consumer stories of our times then this job is made for you.

You take initiative and can move stories forward with your strong investigative sense. But youre also a team player who welcomes stepping in and assisting your colleagues with daily tasks without being asked because you see the need. There is often a requirement to do field research to determine the path of a story and youre up for that challenge. Advice and guidance are available but initiative and independent judgement are expected.

As a senior writer you will work within story teams (alongside a host and a story producer) under the direction of the Executive Producer and Senior Producer. You already see yourself as a great communicator which will be key in your role connecting with people centered in our investigative journalism. You demonstrate an exceptional skill in writing including for broadcast written features and social platforms.

You also have a keen attention to detail so your notes will be thorough and will include everything we need to keep our investigations organized. Your familiarity with the legal system the corporate world and government bureaucracy will ensure you maneuver around any roadblock that comes your way.

You have a strong understanding of CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices and your work will adhere to it.

Key Tasks:

  • Consistently pitches original ideas for program content in line with the programs mandate and objectives

  • An expert fact checker who ensures accuracy with all versions of the story

  • Assists in developing program content including writing researching and/or editing.

  • Experience writing feature length material for presentation on air and/or that describes complex investigative issues in a clear and concise manner and provides detailed analysis to enhance the understanding of the listener or viewer.

  • Critically edits material written by others and/or items produced by others.

  • Familiar with writing style guide.

  • Organizes the participation of interviewees creative contributors and other participants

  • Finding experts with diverse backgrounds and opinions and pre-interviewing them

  • Develops background introduction and line of questioning conducts investigative research and ensures the briefing of all members of the team.

  • Maintains contact files.

  • Participates in all aspects of the production; includes conducting hidden camera shoots and willingness to appear on camera for production shoots as required.

  • As required performs the following tasks:

    • Any task of an Associate Producer

    • Field produce program elements;

    • Direct a program in the field;

    • Assign direct and coordinate the work of other personnel working on a project for which the producer is responsible;

    • Edit encode digitize and package audio and video material for a website using appropriate technologies;

    • Assist in maintaining a level of communication or rapport with members of the audience (through various platforms including digital and social) which is both feasible and appropriate to the style and nature of the program;

    • Perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the program

    • Conduct field research including location scouts; organize logistics for local national and international travel for the purpose of production as required

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience including proven ability in the field and knowledge of the broadcasting industry

  • A minimum of three years of experience in investigative journalism preferably with a consumer focus

  • An understanding of consumer journalism and the tools needed to achieve it.

  • Experience in filing FOI requests.

  • Familiarity with product testing.

  • Solid journalistic skills and demonstrated understanding of CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices particularly those sections dealing with responsible communication misrepresentation and hidden cameras and microphones.

  • Able to work with experienced producers and hosts to develop and produce high-impact current affairs programming under tight deadlines.

  • Ability to think critically and the ability to apply critical thinking to consumer reporting.

  • Excellent writing skills.

  • Able to keep track of a number of simultaneous activities and prioritize and plan.

  • Able to analyze complex journalistic issues.

  • Able to make decisions quickly and under pressure.

  • Able to work productively with hosts producers and other members of the Marketplace team.

  • Excellent problem solving skills.

  • Able to communicate both verbally and in writing clearly and concisely.

  • Creativity and a love of the craft of video journalism.

  • Ability to pitch and recognize stories that fit the unique Marketplace/consumer news mandate.

  • Must be available for flexible shift work including evenings and weekend duties.

  • This is currently a hybrid role based in Toronto with set in-office days which is subject to change.
