Job Description

Qualifications:

  1. Masters Degree in Social Work Educational Counseling Psychology or related field from an accredited college or university.
  2. Previous counseling experience preferably with adolescents.
  3. Skills necessary to provide individual/group counseling including: focus on significant teen social issues ability to conduct individual/group assessment knowledge required to provide information/resources to assist students in career planning ability to consult with staff and outside professionals in educational psychiatric counseling court and other settings ability to work with diverse populations supervision skills adherence to ethical/legal issues in counseling ability to conduct research/evaluation and knowledge of technology to assist individuals with scheduling and career planning.
  4. Certified by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as a School Adjustment Counselor. Certified or Certifiable by the DESE as Guidance Counselor. Preferred certification as LICSW/LCSW or LMHC.0

Description: The School Adjustment Counselor will assist all assigned students in attaining high levels of achievement social and emotional growth as well as workplace preparation via the provision of direct and indirect services. Provide focused services to students having adjustment or personal difficulties which impede academic and vocational performance. School Adjustment Counselors are assigned to the Student Services Department and report directly to the Guidance Department Head.

Reports to: Principal Administrator for Student Services and Guidance Department Head

Responsibilities:

  1. Implement and maintain the delivery of support and educational counseling for all assigned students in individual and group settings to assure adjustment to school and to vocational placements.
  2. Provide crisis intervention counseling in collaboration with school administrators as needed.
  3. Serve as liaison for assigned students in collaborating with parents teachers administrators and agencies as appropriate.
  4. Collaborate with outside counseling psychiatric court and educational personnel to assist students.
  5. Refer students for Special Education evaluation when needed and participate in TEAM meeting and evaluation process as required (includes coordination with the development of behavior plans and functional behavioral assessments and the writing of educational assessments for all initial and re-evaluations).
  6. Develop write and review annually student 504 Accommodation Plans including the conducting of parent meetings and collaboration with teachers to ensure provision of required support.
  7. Act as an advocate for assigned students when necessary including resolution of any disciplinary issues and interpreting and translation services if applicable.
  8. Monitor student performance regularly including academic and vocational performance and attendance and discipline records.
  9. Implement the scheduling process for all assigned students including planning course requests and any schedule changes.
  10. Administer group testing as required (PSAT Stanford 9).
  11. Interpret assessment data for students and work to assist students with the development and update of individualized Career Plans.
  12. In conjunction with Career Counselors disseminate college and career information materials (including SAT materials) and assist seniors with college search and planning activities financial aid and scholarship search and decision-making regarding college placement.
  13. Provide preventative services via classroom and school wide presentations in order to maintain a positive supportive school culture.
  14. Identify students to participate in Tech Prep activities and visits to post-secondary institutions and other field trips.
  15. Assist Mentor Advisor with coordination of school-wide Mentoring Program and Freshmen Admissions and Orientation activities as needed.
  16. Maintain all student records in accordance with FERPA follow professional guidelines concerning mandated reporting and documentation.
  17. Provide quarterly progress reports and Medicaid billing of IEP counseling goals. Maintain an organized system of student documentation of group/individual meetings and parent/guardian consultation
  18. Complete all required paperwork on time ensuring thorough assessments documentation and compliance with all federal and state law.
  19. Attend staff and department meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  20. Other duties deemed necessary by the Superintendent/Director of designee.

Evaluation: Evaluated in accordance with the DESE Standards and Indicators of Effective Specialized Instructional Support Personnel (SISP) and the current Northeast Teachers Association contract.

Terms of Employment:

  1. 184 day work year plus 5 days at conclusion of school year and five days prior to the opening of school.
  2. Salary and benefits in accordance with NTA contract.
