Position Summary:
The Pattern/Machine Shop Manager is responsible for tooling fabrication and maintenance within the foundry. This role ensures that all tooling meets stringent quality standards aligns with production schedules and supports cost efficiency goals. The manager works cross-functionally with engineering production and quality teams to drive manufacturing excellence and continuous improvement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership & Management
- Supervise train and mentor pattern shop and tooling personnel.
- Plan prioritize and coordinate pattern and tooling activities to meet production deadlines.
- Enforce compliance with safety quality and environmental regulations.
- Collaborate with engineering on new product introductions and tooling design enhancements.
- Manage tooling inventory ensuring accurate documentation proper storage and lifecycle tracking.
Process Improvement
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives using lean manufacturing principles.
- Evaluate and upgrade tooling processes and equipment to improve efficiency quality and reliability.
- Diagnose and resolve tooling-related issues promptly to minimize downtime.
Budget & Cost Control
- Develop and manage the pattern shop and tooling budget.
- Source and manage external vendors for tooling and material procurement.
- Monitor tooling expenditures and identify opportunities for cost savings.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain detailed records of tooling designs revisions and maintenance history.
- Ensure all tooling and processes comply with industry standards and customer specifications.
Managerial Responsibilities:
- Carry out supervisory duties in accordance with company policies and applicable laws.
- Responsibilities include training planning assigning and directing work; performance appraisals; rewarding and disciplining employees; and resolving conflicts.
Qualifications :
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelors degree in engineering manufacturing technology or a related field.
- Five (5) years of experience in a foundry environment with a focus on pattern making and tooling.
- Two (2) years of supervisory or managerial experience.
- Strong knowledge of foundry processes materials and tooling techniques.
- Experience with 3D printing or additive manufacturing in tooling (preferred).
- Familiarity with ISO or other quality management systems (preferred).
Working Conditions:
- Physical activities include climbing lifting (up to 50 lbs) balancing walking standing stooping and handling tools and materials.
- Work environment varies from office settings to plant environments that may be hot cold dusty and noisy.
- Regular presence in the plant is required.
- Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety shoes glasses gloves hearing protection and hard hats.
