This position is administered by the University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Program and will contribute to the mission of the Center for Ocean and Coastal Health. The position focuses on outreach applied research and engagement activities in the areas of sustainable fisheries marine debris reduction climate adaptation and coastal water quality across the Hawaiian Islands.
Coastal communities in Hawaii face complex and interrelated challenges stemming from overfishing pollution climate change and marine debris. There is a critical need for applied science effective outreach and collaborative capacity-building efforts that promote ocean and coastal health. This position is designed to respond to these needs through cross-sector partnerships community-engaged research and innovative extension programming.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The responsibilities and primary functions of the position include but are not limited to:
Minimum Qualifications:
A Masters degree from a college or university of recognized standing with major work in in marine science oceanography coastal ecology fisheries natural resource management environmental science or related field whichever is appropriate.
At least three (3) years of successful experience in Cooperative Extension work Sea Grant Extension work or equivalency in closely related fields.
Ability to exercise independent judgement and to assume responsibility for developing a Cooperative Extension program.
Ability to work harmoniously with other agents in an integrated Cooperative Extension system and with related agencies.
Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
Demonstrated ability to develop and lead extension or outreach programs.
Strong written and oral communication skills including the ability to produce accessible high-quality materials.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively across sectors and disciplines.
Professionalism in working with a diverse range of stakeholders.
Desirable Qualifications:
Experience working in Hawaii or Pacific Island coastal communities.
Knowledge of fisheries policy marine debris impacts and mitigation or nonpoint source pollution.
Familiarity with community-based or participatory research approaches.
Track record of securing grant funding and managing projects.
Knowledge of Hawaiian culture coastal traditions or local ecological knowledge systems.
Experience developing culturally appropriate educational or outreach materials.
