Yakima Valley Community College seeks an innovativeChican@ Studies Instructor committed to community college students and their success. The successful applicant will be broadly accomplished in Chican@ Studies be culturally competent with commitment and expertise in working with diverse populations utilize appropriate technology in the classroom and have a record as a successful teacher or be able to demonstrate strong promise. This is a tenure-track position.

Chican@ Studies serves students through interdisciplinary education based on principles of social justice. CHST curriculum prepares students to critically examine and address intellectual traditions and contemporary issues resulting from political historical economic and cultural constructs of race class and gender as they manifest in Chican@ and US Latinx communities.

We value opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration finding ways to utilize cooperative learning and utilizing various technologies in the classroom and for online instruction. All faculty are engaged in the assessment of college goals and purposes.

Essential Tasks

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

  • Adapt to a variety of teaching situations including learning communities and other interdisciplinary approaches.
  • Understand and successful use of learning technology both online and as a tool for distance education and experiential learning.
  • Create an open arena to integrate the work of and issues relating Chican@ and US Latin@ communities.
  • Place primary emphasis on student learning in the design delivery and evaluation of courses.
  • Teach to a variety of learning styles as demonstrated in the development of course materials and assessments of student learning.
  • Proficiency in outcomes assessment of student learning and program effectiveness.
  • Effectively work and interact with colleagues staff students administrators and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a multicultural setting.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication in the classroom and with other professionals.
  • Commit to the mission and values of community college education and YVC.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree in Chican@ Studies or related Social Science discipline.
  • 3 or more years of successful teaching experience.
  • 1 or more years of successful experience working with culturally and ethnically diverse populations in education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion in a multicultural setting and a commitment to advancing the participation of diverse groups and supporting diverse perspectives.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience teaching Chican@ Studies at a community college.
  • Experience developing curriculum.
  • Experience teaching in multiple modalities.
  • Interest in teaching interdisciplinary classes.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Innovative and effective teaching strategies.
  • Culturally responsive pedagogy.
ABILITY TO:
  • Demonstrate dedication to students by creating an equitable environment conducive to meeting students learning needs.
  • Demonstrate student-centered values consistent with student-focused teaching.
  • Demonstrate commitment to upgrade knowledge and skills to maintain relevant curriculum.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for using and learning new technologies to support student success.
  • Provide student-centered academic advising within YVCs Guided Pathways model.
  • Provide time for student consultations outside of scheduled class time.
  • Serve on institutional and community committees including advisory and K-12 partnership committees.
  • Contribute to fostering diversity of the campus curriculum or discipline.
