About the NC Dept. of Public Safety (DPS):

The mission of DPS is to safeguard and preserve the lives and property of the people of North Carolina through prevention protection and preparation. DPS is comprised of approximately 6000 permanent positions and nearly 13000 NC National Guard soldiers and airmen. DPS employees help to ensure North Carolina is a safe place to live work and visit through effective law enforcement juvenile justice programs emergency response and recovery and homeland security preparedness.


About the Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy:
The Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy (TCA) is a quasi-military style resident program for at risk youth in the ages of 16-18. Sponsored by the North Carolina National Guard the TCA mission is to redirect the efforts of young adults who have had trouble succeeding in the normal high school environment. The intent is to give them the skills and attitude to become productive citizens in their communities. The Academies are located in two different locations: Salemburg and New London North Carolina. It is a 17-month program divided into two distinct phases: a five-month in-residence phase at the academies and a twelve-month post-residential phase immediately following graduation for the in-residence phase. TCA seeks to improve the life and future employment potential of its cadets by concentrating on eight core components which are: Life Coping Skills Academic Excellence Responsible Citizenship Job Skills Service to Community Health and Hygiene Physical Fitness and Leadership/Followership.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

DPS uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject to theState Human Resources Actwith the most qualified individuals.

The Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs) listed below along with the Minimum Education and Experience (E&E) are REQUIRED to qualify for this position. To qualify for this position applicants must demonstrate ALL of the following KSAs:

Per 5 CFR 731 upon appointment applicant must be able to obtain a favorable suitability and fitness determination from a Tier 1 background investigation conducted by the Office of Personnel Management. Failure to obtain a favorable determination may result in termination of employment.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

PLEASE NOTE:
The selected will be required to complete the following:
  • Training provided by TCA: Staff Acclimation Course Foundations Course Gang Awareness / Conflict Resolution. Non-Violent Cis Intervention Training and Hands-Off Training
  • First Aid / CPR certification (re-certification required every 2 years)
  • Attend Food Safety training classes as required.
