POSITION SUMMARY

The spiritual care practitioners provide spiritual care through caring supportive listening and prayer while possessing and integrating clinical skills with knowledge of self and religious spiritual philosophical psychological and cultural frameworks. They also plan liturgies and worship services for staff and families coordinate observances of religious feasts and support multi-faith programming and education. Additional functions include spiritual palliative and end-of-life care and support to patients families and staff dealing with grief and loss.

The Spiritual Care Practitioner works in collaboration with the interdisciplinary teams on assigned clinical units. The Practitioners role is to assess spiritual needs and provide comprehensive spiritual care and emotional support to patients families and health care staff in a manner that is appropriate to belief systems and cultural diversity and to document these assessments and encounters in the electronic medical record system.

The Spiritual Care Practitioner participates in sharing on-call and/or back-up on-call duties as and is available to respond to organizational emergencies

The ideal candidate will be a self-directed energetic and creative individual who can respond to the spiritual needs of a diverse population of patients families and staff. They will be committed to our Excellent Service Everyone Belongs and Strong Team strategic directions. They will be integral members of an interdisciplinary care team that serves culturally diverse populations in a pediatric setting when family-centred care is a priority.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Respond to urgent and non-urgent requests for staff/medical staff patient and family spiritual supports

  • Provide staff/medical staff emotional debriefs both in individual and group formats for both urgent and chronic needs

  • Conduct spiritual assessments and spiritual care plans

  • Perform/Assist with Smudging ceremonies

  • Praying& performing spiritual care rituals (ex. Baptisms)

  • Supporting staff/medical staff patients and families during critical events (code blues resuscitations End-Of-Life (EOL) care)

  • Round on inpatient units as a part of each routine shift (not when called in) and provide spiritual care as for patients and their families supporting all expressions of spirituality without imposing personal religious beliefs

  • Document these encounters in the electronic medical record

  • Provide on-call coverage for Spiritual Support services (24/7 support available to families with urgent spiritual support needs)

  • Responding to urgent requests for Spiritual care during crisis situations (EOL care deaths traumas)

  • Responding to requests for urgent emotional debriefs for staff and medical staff

  • Assisting with care after death as (bereavement box handprints etc.)

  • Participate in education relating to staff patient and family wellness and spiritual care

  • Provide Joy in Work mandatory education to staff/medical staff/learners

  • Perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all CHEO corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety

  • Perform other related duties as and assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master of Divinity or equivalent degree in related field (Essential)

  • A minimum of two (2) units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) (Essential)

  • Current membership with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC) (Essential)

  • Minimum two (2) years experience in the Spiritual Health field (Essential)

  • Demonstrated understanding of and willingness to minister in a multi-faith multicultural context (Essential)

  • Demonstrated ability to engage counselling theories interventions and intentional supportive activities to support patients and their families and the ability to quickly identify the appropriate spiritual health practice in order to meet expressed or unexpressed needs (Essential)

  • Demonstrated ability to engage in crisis intervention as such as attending Code Blues or other critical incidents (Essential)

  • Demonstrated ability to navigate electronic medical record (EPIC) pagers email and other communication channels (Essential)

  • Demonstrated strong negotiation influencing and conflict resolution skills while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism (Essential)

  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal written and verbal communication and presentation skills (Essential)

  • Demonstrated ability to support all expressions of spirituality without imposing personal religious beliefs (Essential)

  • Demonstrated ability to approach spiritual health issues in a person-centered manner with insight discernment and flexibility (Essential)

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively handle stressful situations with sensitivity compassion gentleness caring and approachability (Essential)

  • Demonstrated ability to work in accordance with CHEOs Mission Vision and Values (Essential)

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively consistently delivering positive results (Essential)

  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team (Essential)

Effective March 29 2021 CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process. This process may include more varied and multidimensional testing such as a written test practical exam or other assessment. All candidates who meet the essential and preferred qualifications may be tested. Bilingualism (French/English) will be validated by a language proficiency assessment conducted by a third party provider. Candidates will be required to meet the minimum linguistic profile prior to the date of hire.
