Nature of Work
This position provides flexible on-site support for the Citys Recreation Program at the Midway Park location Monday Friday from 11:30am - 3:30pm during the summer season. Mobile Recreation Attendants are responsible for assisting with the delivery of safe high-quality and engaging programming for children teens and families. Attendants help supervise participants support staff maintain program materials and vehicles and serve as positive role models. This position requires strong interpersonal skills the ability to adapt to changing daily assignments and a commitment to providing excellent customer service in a fast-paced team-oriented environment.
- Supports parks and recreation programming by assisting with setup cleanup and activity facilitation at various park locations based on daily needs.
- Leads and facilitates recreational activities for park visitors engaging community members in a safe and inclusive manner while promoting positive interactions.
- Plans and adapts activities based on participant needs and site conditions.
- Transport equipment to and from park sites using a City vehicle ensuring timely and safe delivery to support program and event operations.
- Ensures department services are provided with exceptional customer service and highest ethical standards.
- Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe and efficient manner.
- Maintains a professional image and positive attitude at all times.
- Demonstrates initiative and a strong work ethic while serving as a positive role model for youth ages 412.
- Understands adhere to and enforces departmental and program procedures confidentiality guidelines emergency procedures and health and safety standards for all participants.
- May assist in supervision of children and/or teens on excursions for City-sponsored events.
- Reports for scheduled work with regular reliable and punctual attendance.
- Performs other duties as assigned including but not limited to being assigned to work in other functional areas to cover absences or relief equalize peak work periods or balance the workload.
Necessary Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Basic principles of recreation programming youth engagement and customer service.
- Safe work practices and emergency response procedures in a park or outdoor setting.
- Techniques for maintaining order and managing group behavior in an inclusive and respectful manner.
- Procedures for setting up maintaining and storing program equipment and supplies.
Ability to:
- Safely drive a large van or City vehicle to and from multiple work sites.
- Deal tactfully and effectively with children and adults when enforcing rules and regulations in a recreation setting.
- Exercise sound judgment remain calm in emergencies and respond appropriately to incidents.
- Recognize and correct safety hazards.
- Effectively plan schedule and supervise programs and participants.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Interact and play with program participants through games and athletic activities.
- Handle multiple tasks in high paced environment.
- Deal with participants and parents with poise and tact in sometimes stressful situations.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds in order to arrange equipment.
- Must be able to read interpret direct and follow rules regulations policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must have a valid Washington Drivers License with satisfactory driving record.
- One-year of college course work in recreation education or related field preferred.
- One-year experience working with youth and leading youth activities and programs preferred.
Special Requirements
- Must obtain First Aid/CPR Card within 30 days into employment and maintain throughout employment.
- Responsible for own transportation to and from job site.
- Successful completion of a criminal history and pre-employment background check.
- Because of the known effects of tobacco use the City of Des Moines does not hire applicants who use tobacco products.
Working Conditions and Physical Abilities
- Must be comfortable and qualified to drive a large van to and from work sites. Work is primarily performed outdoors at local parks in varying weather conditions for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs and possess the ability to read understand write and speak English.
- The position requires continual talking hearing and sitting; frequent fingering feeling grasping handling and repetitive motion of hands and wrists; occasional standing and walking; and rare reaching bending and climbing.
