Job Description:

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking a full-time attorney to serve in the Healthcare Crimes Unit (HCU) the States Medicaid Fraud Control Unit within the Criminal Division headquartered in Augusta. The HCU investigates and prosecutes financial fraud and crimes committed by Medicaid providers and their employees. The HCU also prosecutes the abuse neglect and financial exploitation of residents in health care facilities. In addition to criminal prosecution the HCU pursues civil actions against Medicaid providers under the False Claims Act the Unfair Trade Practices Act and common law theories of liability. The Unit is also active in joint state-federal civil actions under federal law initiated by the United States Attorneys Office in Maine and other federal districts.

The position requires occasional out-of-state travel.

Minimum Qualifications:

This is not an entry level position. Candidates must have experience and expertise in handling large complex cases preferably in both state and federal court. The Unit handles matters involving voluminous financial and medical records. In addition to financial crimes criminal cases handled by the Unit include assaults sexual assaults endangering the welfare of dependent persons and drug diversion by health care personnel. The candidate must have jury trial experience excellent research and writing skills and the ability to assume full responsibility for the prosecution of criminal and civil cases. High ethical standards sound judgment strong communication and inter-personal skills good organizational/time management skills and ability to work as a team with law enforcement and other prosecutors are essential. Three or more years of legal practice with demonstrated proficiency in health care law or financial crimes is preferred. Travel throughout the State is required. Candidates must be a member of the Maine Bar in good standing.
