The Sustainability Academy is the countrys first elementary school focused entirely on Education for Sustainability located in the Old North End of Burlington Vermont. Sustainability Academyis seeking a passionate and energetic Speech Language Pathologist - Assistant (SLP-A) to join a school district committed to high levels of achievement for all students. This position requires one to work with students who have diverse cultural backgrounds learning needs and accommodation plans (IEPs 504 Plans and/ or EST Plans). Applicants must be dedicated to the belief that all students can be successful and that all students have the right to be included. SCOPE OF WORK:

Assisting SLPs with planning and providing speech-language pathology services to students with speech voice or language disorders. Additionally assessing students and providing therapeutic intervention to eliminate or reduce problems or impairments that interfere with students ability to derive full benefit from the educational program. Implement speech and language programs or activities as planned and directed by speech-language pathologists. Monitor the use of alternative communication devices and systems. To facilitate and supplement the educational process under the direction of a professional staff member. Responsibilities include communication facilitation hearing aid management carrying out programs designed by the SLP managing behavior teaching self-regulation skills and supporting & facilitating social engagement with peers. Physical responsibilities include lifting carrying personal care and the ability to assess a situation and respond quickly.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Assist speech-language pathologists in the conduct of student screenings or assessments of language voice fluency articulation or hearing.
2. Follow and implement treatment plans or protocols as directed by speech-language pathologists.
3. Document student progress toward meeting established objectives and report the information to the SLP;
4. Collect compile and document data on student achievement to assess program quality prepare reports and/or update IEP logs. Consult with SLP teachers etc. for the purpose of providing requested information and developing plans for services.
5. Assist the SLP during assessments by assisting with documentation and performing clerical duties;
6. Prepare therapy material and/or equipment for use in therapy activities; adapt or modify instructional materials and/or equipment as determined by student needs and abilities under the direction of the SLP ;
7. Assist in maintaining student records tallying data preparing charts records graphs and reports;
8. Observe and report significant behavioral patterns or other problems to the SLP;
9. Assist in maintaining appropriate student behavior between activities;
10. Assist speech-language pathologists in the remediation or development of speech and language skills.
11. Assist the SLP in conducting in-service training sessions or family and community education programs.
12. Perform support duties such as preparing materials keeping records maintaining supplies and scheduling activities
13. Maintain and prepare a wide variety of manual and electronic materials (e.g. charts logs records and/or reports) for the purpose of documenting activities providing written reference conveying information; and/or complying with mandated requirements.
14. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level and interests of students.
15. Assist in the development and implementation of individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students with Speech/Language impairment and assist with IEPs for students with speech/language as a service on an annual basis or according to requirements
16. Comply with all Medicaid requirements for school-based claiming including obtaining written Medicaid consent from parents of all students served and timely filing of claims that meet Medicaid standards
17. Maintain records and information concerning individual students in the prescribed confidential manner and using the records and information only for the purposes for which they are maintained according to FERPA guidelines
18. Assist licensed SLP in therapeutic services
19. Participate in various meetings for the purpose of addressing student goals and needs and to meet laws and policies
20. Share with other staff members the responsibility for school activities and student supervision
21. Maintain consistent attendance and conform to regular work hours specified under contract.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

1. Required: High School diploma plus at least two years of post-secondary education or graduation from a speech-language pathology assistant program.
2. Preferred: Associates Degree in Speech-Language Pathology or related field.

Skills And/Or Abilities Required:

• Knowledge of and skills in administering scoring and interpreting communication assessments.
• Knowledge and understanding of child development and communication development.
• Knowledge of and skills in best practice instruction specific to various disabilities.
• Knowledge of normal speech language and hearing development
• Knowledge of language disorders and rehabilitation
• Skills in managing and promoting positive student behavior.
• Skills in data analysis to assess monitor and inform instruction for student growth.
• Skills and abilities in organization time management and record keeping.
• Ability to operate a computer and the skills to learn and utilize software and other technology in instruction.
• Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with other professionals in a team setting.
• Ability to interact positively and effectively with parents students staff and administrators.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
