The County of Ventura is excited to present anExternship Programat the Probation Agency for the 2025 Fall semester. This is an opportunity to consider a career as a Deputy Probation Officer. This 8-week program is designed to provide a clear and realistic preview of the role. As a participant you will gain invaluable insight into the daily responsibilities career trajectory and community impact of a probation officer. If you are looking to confirm your career choice and understand the challenges and rewards of this vital work this externship is the definitive next step.

Program Highlights: A key component of your externship will be your time at the Juvenile Facilities. In this secure setting you will see how Deputy Probation Officers serve as mentors counselors and authority figures for justice-involved youth. Youll witness firsthand the structured environment rehabilitative programming and the critical daily interactions that aim to foster positive change. This immersive experience offers a powerful glimpse into the complexities of the juvenile justice system and provides a deeper understanding of the vital role officers play in guiding young lives toward a brighter future.

Externship Learning Areas:

  1. Institutional Setting Observe operations within the juvenile facility.
  2. Office-Based Casework Shadow officers in managing caseloads completing reports and interacting with clients.
  3. Preventative & Rehabilitative Services Learn about intervention strategies and support services provided to clients.

This externship is ideal for students seeking practical knowledge into probation work while gaining insight about a future full-time career with the Probation Agency.

The program is in person for approximately eight weeks fromSeptember 9 2025 to October 30 2025 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.The externship will include an orientation session a mid-way check-in mandatory training participation in mock interviews and a closing session.

This competitive recruitment will result in selecting two(2)exceptional externs. The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future student worker III vacancies at the Probation Agency.

The ideal candidates will be over the age of 21 have no felony convictions and be able to pass a background investigation. Additionally the ideal candidates will be currently enrolled in an academic program and have completed criminal justice coursework proficient in Microsoft Suite and demonstrate a commitment to the highest level of service in public service.

SALARY:$18.53 Hour
AGENCY/DEPARTMENT:Probation Agency

NOTE:Student Worker III is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and incumbents in this bargaining unit are employed as extra-help and are consequently not eligible for benefits.

Examples Of Duties

Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is established to provide departments with the opportunity to utilize college students for limited-term service to assist with routine professional para-professional and technical duties or to assist with special projects or studies. This class in addition to providing useful service to County Departments will provide students with practical experience in fields which may be related to their fields of study.

The externship is observational but may include the following duties to enhance learning.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Assists regular staff of various departments in performing routine professional para-professionalortechnical duties.
  • Assists in collecting and analyzing statistical data.
  • Assists in researching information and conducting investigations.
  • Assists in conducting special studies in a variety of occupational fields.
  • May assist in the supervision of clients in various departments.
  • Assists in the preparation and the presentation of oral and/or written reports.

Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION TRAINING and EXPERIENCE:
No work experience is required. Students must provide proof that they are enrolled in at least nine (9) units of academic/technical college/university courses at the undergraduate level OR at least six (6) units at the graduate level.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicants must be 21 years of age.
  • Must not be convicted of a felony.
  • Completion of at least three (3) units of criminal justice related coursework at a vocational/technical school college or university.

Desired: Microsoft Suite proficiency

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Verification of the required coursework is required. Transcripts or grade reports must reflect the completed coursework in the required subject AND must be attached to your application.Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

If transcripts or grade reports are not included with your application you will not be allowed to continue in the process.
