Job Description

Essential Functions and Duties of the Position
The essential functions and duties listed below are intended as illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if work is similar related or a logical assignment to the position.
Animal Caregiver duties:
- Prepare food a and feed live small collection of exoxtic animals daily
- Develop a rotating schedule for animal room andanimalcage upkeep and cleaning - dishwasher use laundry etc.
- Observe animal collection for general health & changes in behavior and administer medications if necessary
- volunteers
- Identify when food stocks are getting low and occasionally shopat grocery or pet supply store for animal food and supply items.
- Occasionally supervise student volunteers that come to the animal room and train weekend ands summer animal care volunteers
- Occasionally collaborate and communicate with science center staff school staff students volunteers and others regarding animal care and borrowing
- Track and organize animal lending and summer/weekend care
Skills Knowledge Abilities
- Must be comfortable handling live animals including some exotics crickets and roaches
- Must have basic knowledge of animal care - Science Center staff will train on specifics of collection
- Must have organization skills to maintain animal room upkeep - follow schedules track animals going in and out of classrooms
- Must have strong time management skills
- Must have strong interpersonal skills comfortable interacting with students and adults
- Must be willing to learn the NPS animal policies town and state requirements for working with live animals
- Must submit documentation of having recieved a recent tetanus shot
Science Center Background
The Needham Science Center is a 49-year old institution serving the Needham Public Schools with a special focus on grades K-5 science ecology and engineering practices. Classroom teachers are provided science content kits materials equipment professional development workshops consultations programs and fieldtrips. Science Center staff support educational and environmental district goals and community organizations that support these goals. Program offerings fieldtrips and curriculum kits are inquiry-based integrated and aligned to the national and state frameworks.
The Science Center houses 15 live animals that are used for classroom programs and classroom visits. Each animal needs socializing feeding and habitat cleaning on a regular schedule Monday - Friday. AllScience Center staff must be free of allegies to animals animal bedding and animal food sources comfortable handling caring for and transporting live animals in their personal car. Some Science Center programs require extensive handling of animals while presenting to a classroom of students.
Work Conditions:
Animal room is located at Science Center in Newman School. Job runs through the 25-26 school year requires 2-hours per day - Monday - Friday. Hours are flexible and may include night time.
