Department Overview

The Bone Density Technologist operates x-ray equipment used to take and develop radiographs for the purpose of measuring bone mineral measurements.


As part of the Division of Endocrinology Diabetes & Clinical Nutrition Bone Density Unit the Bone Density Technologist supports the Bone Densitometry clinical service by providing expertise in performing bone mineral measurements and scan analysis. The position works with pediatric adult and geriatric patients of varying mobility. The Technologist optimizes the technique for each image during the examination to obtain the highest quality study with the most comfort to patients. The Technologist assists with maintaining bone mineral measurement equipment and supplies maintaining quality assurance records scanning interpretation reports into EpicCare occasionally supporting the Bone and Mineral clinical research program and reporting external quality control facilities on behalf of clinical trial requirements.

Radiographic Procedures:Performs bone mineral radiography measurements in a clinical environment. These procedures include routine and special bone density radiographs. Bone Density Technologists work with adult and geriatric patients with varying degrees of mobility. Optimizes technique for each image during the examination to obtain the highest quality study with the most comfort to the patient. Provides optimal quality to acquire images using technical skills and knowledge of equipment. Recognizes and reports significant situations relating to patient care. Orients and trains and new employees as required and follows safe practices in the
principle of Radiation Safety.

General Clinic Assisting: May be required to schedules patient appointments; answers telephones; weighs and measures patient transports patient assists patient in undressing stocks rooms with supplies other duties as licensing and orientation permits

Miscellaneous: Demonstrates excellent techniques and principles in performing exams; performs routine cleaning and reports any mechanical failures; performs quality control to ensure proper operation of equipment. Continues to stay current to new technology hardware and software upgrades. Acts as liaison with medical staff and referring clinic physicians
and their medical staff.
