Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Provides specialized instruction with specific educational planning for those students whose needs cannot be met within the general classroom
  • Works cooperatively with general and special education teachers by interpreting the abilities and disabilities of their students and assists students with achievement of the curriculum; assesses students who are referred to determine if they qualify for the adapted physical education services
  • Consults with General Education PE teacher to provide modifications and accommodations for students who received Adapted PE on a consultative basis
  • Develops and instructs an appropriate and innovative Adapted PE curriculum
  • Designs programs to meet individual student needs as specified on the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) in physical fitness gross motor skills perceptual motor skills and sports and games achievement
  • Develops implements and annually reviews student Individualized Education Programs (IEP) according to federal state and local procedures
  • Maintains ongoing records of student performance and IEP implementation in order to evaluate progress including report cards and IEP progress reports
  • Evaluates and monitors student progress and makes periodic reports on the achievement and personal adjustment of identified students
  • Maintains accurate written records of student progress goals and objectives attendance and parent contacts
  • Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide appropriate educational programs for students with disabilities
  • Keeps abreast of recent developments in education for special needs students and shows evidence of continuing professional growth
  • Complies with all special education procedures from the division wide Special Education Handbook and the Virginia State Regulations Governing Students with Disabilities
