This position serves as a North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) in the SBI Drug Program. This is a sworn position with Benefits and is subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act. The ASAC is required to respond on a 24-hour seven day a week basis and is required to work a 160-hour work period as a minimum. Overtime and on-call duty are required in this position. Job responsibilities include the following:
This ASAC is responsible for the direct supervision of multiple agents and/or other personnel within the SBI Drug Program. The ASAC must maintain ongoing relationships with SBI districts and units in support of the agencys drug initiative in addition to federal state and local partners. Federal partners may include but not be limited to HSI DEA the Postal Inspection Service EPA and the IRS. The ASAC will provide regular updates to the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) about their investigations as well as those investigations under their supervision.
The ASAC will report to the SAC and will assist the SAC by giving guidance to agents (Agent Trainee Agent I Agent II and Agent III) through the administrative review of investigative reports case review reports weekly activity reports expense claim reports special funds reports and other necessary documents prepared by agents. The ASAC will ensure that reports are completed accurately and timely and in accordance with Bureau policy. The ASAC will assist the SAC with the assignment of caseloads to agents and will review and assess active and ongoing investigations to include prioritizing and development of leads tracking and disposition of physical evidence. This is to ensure that investigations are reported and completed accurately and in a timely manner and brought to a successful conclusion.
The ASAC will assist the SAC in monitoring overtime for program agents and conduct time management for each cycle. The ASAC will assist the SAC by coaching program agents to improve and excel in their job performance and preparing interim and annual job performance evaluations for agents under their supervision. In the absence of the SAC the ASAC will assume the responsibility of supervising the program.
This ASAC will be responsible for overseeing the diversion and clandestine laboratory response programs in addition to environmental crimes.
This ASAC will gather and analyze criminal intelligence data and determine the proper course of action and will regularly utilize analytical tools and methods to identify targets.
This ASAC will work with the SBI Drug Program SAC and other ASACs on various programs and projects towards the advancement of the SBIs drug mission. This position will also assist with other drug-related projects to include the SBI Drug Bulletin and grant-realted needs.
This ASAC must be highly proficient in the use of technical and analytical intelligence tools and will teach these platforms and methods to agents. This ASAC will assist the SAC with identification of innovative technology and techniques which may be utilized by agents in drug investigations. This ASAC will assist with agency training needs regarding general and advanced narcotics investigations including at the SBI Academy and in Progressive training sessions and may update previously existing or generate new courses of instruction in these areas.
This ASAC may provide onsite supervision at a buy-bust reverse and undercover drug transactions. This ASAC may have the added responsibility of tracking and reconciling SBI Special Funds used in drug investigations. This ASAC is assigned the responsibility of conducting criminal investigations anywhere in the state with specific emphasis on coordinating conducting and supervising complex investigations primarily regarding high level narcotics violations diversions clandestine laboratory response and environmental crimes. The ASAC must be capable of providing testimony and evidence in court during prosecution. These investigations must be conducted in an exceptional manner with coordination between the ASAC and the appropriate prosecutor.
This ASAC will attend in-service training as required by the Bureau as well as special schools seminars and training sessions. The ASAC will perform other duties as assigned by the SAC.

Bachelors degree from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of law enforcement experience that included having the power to arrest; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: Applicants must have graduated from the SBI Academy and meet any other applicable North Carolina state statutory standards for law enforcement officers.
Selective Criteria: Applicants must have current North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Certification.
