DEQ has an open opportunity for a Chemist I.
It is full-time (40 hours per week) withState Benefits
This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.
This Chemist I is to inspect certificate holders facilities to assure that they conform to state and federal regulations including NC Laboratory Certification Branch rules (i.e. 15A NCAC 02H .0800) US EPA Code of Federal Regulations and EPA- and DEQ-mandated methodologies and procedures for each environmental parameter they report.
Key Responsibilities:- Audit/inspect assigned certificate holders facilities to ensure that NC DWR WW/GW LCB rules and approved environmental analytical procedures are adhered to and up-to-date approved environmental procedures are followed.
- Write post-inspection reports and review certificate holders corrective action responses to post-inspection reports.
- Continually monitor state and federal regulations for changes in the law and analytical methodology and communicate these effectively to the regulated laboratory community relevant DEQ employees and affected parties.
- Assist certificate holders with general questions and analytical troubleshooting via phone email and on-site technical assistance visits.
- Peer review other auditors post-inspection reports and provide feedback within prescribed deadlines.
- Write/revise and/or peer review parameter method inspection checklists LCB policies technical assistance and guidance documents and Approved Procedures as assigned and provide comments/revisions.
The Division of Water Resources:
The Division of Water Resources is responsible for protecting North Carolinas drinking surface and groundwater for all waterbodies including lakes streams rivers wetlands and aquifers. This environmental stewardship is accomplished through actions including permitting issuance investigations regulatory compliance and enforcement monitoring and field assessments certifications laboratory analysis and testing planning water quality standards management educational outreach and other efforts. The Division comprises five Sections: Water Quality Regional Operations; Water Sciences; Public Water Supply; Water Quality Permitting; and Water Planning. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
