Our Life Cycle Engineering (LCE) center at Raytheon has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivatedPrincipal Software Safety Engineerto join theLand & Air Defense Systems (LADS) System Safety teamin Tewksbury MA.

LCE is dedicated to ensuring that our products are safe reliable maintainable and delivered on time. The LCE team encompasses multiple disciplines that support engineering program offices and customers throughout the entire life cycle of our products from conception to deactivation. Our focus areas include product support disciplines such as reliability system safety and supportability.

This role on the LADS System Safety team involves contributing to these key areas by ensuring the safety of software components within the LADS program thereby upholding the high standards of product safety and reliability that LCE maintains.


What You Will Do


As a Principal Software Safety Engineer on the Land & Air Defense Systems (LADS) System Safety team you will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Analysis of engineering software and/or firmware (IAW MIL-STD-882E JSSSEH AOP-52 etc.)

  • Work with software development teams to review and analyze embedded software code

  • Collaborate with Program Management and Government approval authorities from program startup through deployment to gain concurrence with software builds

  • Performing Software and/or Firmware analysis

  • Executing the Software System Safety Program

  • Mentoring junior engineers

  • Interfacing with stakeholders (e.g. customers program offices subcontractors vendors)

  • Preparing Safety Assessment Reports and Safety Program Briefs for Customer Approval

  • Briefing software safety of the program at technical reviews and as part of the safety approval process

  • Interpreting system requirements customer specifications and military standards

  • Collaborating across multiple disciplines to gain a full understanding of product architecture and design

  • Preparing internal and customer reports describing various analyses relevant to the System Safety program

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires a degree in Science Technology Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience OR an Advanced STEM degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience.

  • Experience with Computer Science Safety Engineering Systems Engineering Software Engineering Electrical Engineering or Firmware Engineering.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Overall DoD System Safety Program experience as well as experience in command-and-control systems and/or weapon combat systems

  • Experience with safety standards (MIL-STD-882 AMCOM 385-17 JSSSEH AOP-52 AR 385-10 MIL-STD-1472 MIL-STD-1474)

  • Experience developing/coordinating all products required to obtain safety review board approvals needed to field a weapon system

  • Experience producing System Safety Program Plans (SSPP) Safety Assessment Reports (SAR) Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA) Hazard Tracking Logs (HTLs) and Hazardous Material Management Plans and Reports

  • Experience conducting System Safety Working Groups (SSWG) as well as managing a safety program and providing direction to supporting safety personnel

  • Ability to ensure system safety processes and requirements are properly planned executed and documented throughout the entire life cycle of weapon systems overseeing the execution of programmatic system safety activities

  • Experience with Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) and Proposal Development

  • Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance employees as they are essential to the development of our products.

This position requires a security clearance. DCSA Consolidated Adjudication Services (DCSA CAS) an agency of the Department of Defense handles and adjudicates the security clearance process. More information about Security Clearances can be found on the US Department of State government website here: salary range for this role is 101000 USD - 203000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer including but not limited to the role function and associated responsibilities a candidates work experience location education/training and key skills.
