Job Summary: The Department of Natural Sciences invites applications for a full-time 9-month tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant/Associate professor in Chemistry broadly defined starting this academic school year. The candidate will primarily be responsible for teaching the undergraduate General Chemistry series (General Chemistry I and II) and other courses as needed by the chemistry program and aligned with the candidates qualifications. These courses serve seven bachelors degree programs including our B.S. in Biology B.S. in Chemistry and B.S. in Integrated Environmental Science. The successful applicant must be capable of and committed to effective teaching program level assessment of student learning and working with diverse populations.
Duties/Responsibilities: The primary role of the successful candidate will be to provide exceptional teaching using modern pedagogical methods experiential learning and innovative techniques. The person will contribute to the departments teaching mission by bringing in exceptional teaching pedagogy to the General Chemistry curriculum and providing opportunities for advanced courses. In addition the candidate is expected to develop an independent externally funded research program that engages and trains undergraduate students in modern chemical approaches in their area of expertise. Finally the person will contribute to the University through service-oriented duties including serving on committees community outreach efforts or student-centered activities.
Required Skills/Abilities: In addition to the requirements discussed above in order to be a leading applicant in this search the applicant must be fluent in the English language be able to communicate effectively to a diverse student population be experienced in program-level assessment of student learning and the effective use of innovative curricular approaches that are student-centered inquiry-based and hands-on oriented and be familiar with learning management systems (ex. Canvas Moodle etc.). The candidate must also be able to demonstrate outstanding potential for excellence in teaching through a successful interview and /or classroom demonstration. Lastly the candidate must be a U.S. citizen or hold permanent resident status.
Education and Experience: A minimum of a masters degree in chemistry is required but a Ph.D. is preferred.
Preferred Skills Experience and Education: The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Chemistry or closely related discipline be able to work and engage effectively with faculty staff and students from diverse ethnic cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds demonstrated publications in peer-reviewed journals and the ability to support an extramural research program at the undergraduate level.
Physical Requirements: The candidate must be able to handle minor tasks associated with their position and be versed in maintaining safety regulations in laboratory environments.
