Position: School Nurse-Teacher
Division: Pupil Personnel Services - Health Services
SUMMARY:
The School Nurse-Teacher provides population based health services to school children public and nonpublic schools in Cranston
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains and monitors individual student health records to identify the health needs of students implements services and evaluates plan of care.
- Collaborates with students and their families educators and health care providers to enhance student wellness.
- Gathers all necessary medical data working closely with parents and health care providers to create and implement an individual Health Care Plans Emergency Care Plans and Evacuation Plans for students with special health care needs.
- Plans and facilitates state-mandated screening programs and arrange and assist with school physicals performed by the school physicians and make referrals and follow-ups when needed.
- Serves as a member of the school team interpreting medical data and writing objectives for the health component of the IEP.
- Supports and enforces mandated immunization protocols as established by RI Department of Health.
- Counsels and encourages each student and staff member to achieve and maintain optimum health.
- Collaborates with other health educators in implementing school department health curriculum within the guidelines of the RI Department of Education for Health Education.
- Provides direct classroom instruction as well as health-related inservice to staff members including but not Limited to Epi-Pen administration for anaphylactic allergy reaction.
- Collaborates with school administration and other appropriate staff to provide a safe and healthful environment for all students and staff within OSHA standards as well as RI Rules and Regulations for Healthful School Environment.
- Provides physician-ordered nursing treatment and specialized health procedures including medications to allow the student to attend school and remain in the least restrictive environment.
- Develops a list of medical concerns of students and inform those who need to know of existing medical concerns.
- Collaborates and coordinates with the principal and any individual who suspects an incident of child abuse or neglect in the reporting to the RI Department of Children Youth and Families.
- Provides emergency and first aid care to all students and personnel when necessary according to the annual Emergency and First Aid Procedures authorized by the School Physicians.
- Maintains a daily log of all nursing interventions as they occur in health room and providing a monthly report of all professional activities to the Executive Director of Pupil Personnel Services.
- Other appropriate duties as required by the Executive Director of Pupil Personnel Services or designee.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Rhode Island Department of Health license as a Registered Nurse.
- Rhode Island Department of Education Certification as a School Nurse-Teacher.
- Certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation.
- Bachelors Degree from an accredited institution.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Health Room as described in Rules and Regulations for School Health Programs. The School Nurse-Teacher will be expected to use his/her car to travel to schools/meetings. Reimbursement for mileage will be made. The School Nurse-Teacher is based in one or more schools.

POSITION IN TOTAL ORGANIZATION:
The School Nurse-Teacher is responsible to the Building Administrator the Coordinator of Nursing Services and the Executive Director of Pupil Personnel Services.
WORK YEAR:
The School Nurse-Teachers work year is defined in the Master Agreement between the Cranston School Committee and the Cranston Teachers Alliance.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
The salary range for the School Nurse-Teacher will be as stated in the Master Agreement between the Cranston School Committee and the Cranston Teachers Alliance.
