Job Description

LICENSED HEALTH/PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER

West Alexaner Middle School

10-month Full-time position

General Statement of Job

Under the general supervision of the school principal plans develop students physical skills and abilities strength agility poise coordination and teamwork; develop students understanding of the importance of exercise to physical and mental well-being; and to motivate students to work towards physical fitness hygiene and good health.

Required Education

  • Bachelors degree and licensed by the state of North Carolina in the required area(s) preferred.
  • Degree in education or in a related area that will qualify for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops and administers Physical Education and Health classes consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Teaches knowledge of and develops skills and abilities in physical fitness rhythm and dance coordination and agility exercise sports and nutrition.
  • Develops students concepts in leadership teamwork responsibility and social skills.
  • Provides a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student growth and progress in physical educational activities and modifies instructional methods to fit individual students needs including students with special needs.
  • Inspects equipment and field areas used to ensure they are in good and safe working order.
  • Treats all students in a fair and equitable manner; interacts effectively with students co-workers parents and community.
  • Maintains and respects the confidentiality of student and school personnel information.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping grading and reporting for all student activities achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom and promote effective participation in all activities.
  • Communicates effectively with parents through a variety of means and encourages parental involvement in students education.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars workshops or professional meetings.
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health and learning problems.
  • Supervises students in activities that take place out of the classroom during the school day including activities involving school transportation.
  • Selects and requisitions instructional materials and equipment.

Additional Duties

  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal and other central office administrators as designated by the superintendent.

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

  • Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations that interrupt normal daily schedules.
  • Knowledge of current physical education instructional methods as well as differentiate instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations regarding education and students as well as relating to health education.
  • Knowledge of physiology health and nutrition biology and biological functions anatomy hygiene exercise and best ways to promote physical and mental well-being.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants. Also includes receiving instructions assignments and/or directions from superiors.
  • Requires the ability to record and deliver information explain procedures to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including medical legal and counseling terminology.
  • Must be physically able to use/demonstrate exercise and sports equipment.
  • Trained in first aid or willingness to receive certifiation
  • Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally; and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift care push pull or otherwise move objects.
