Summary
Assistspatients with activities of daily living provides basic nursing care tonon-acutely ill patients and assists in maintenance of a safe and cleanenvironment under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse in chargeof the team and/or unit. Assists DietaryDepartment as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides general aspect of basic nursing careto all patients within the nursing assistants scope of practice that includesactions that meet psychosocial needs and physical needs to the standard of careto optimize patient safety.
- Meets communication needs of patients and treatspatients and their family with respect and dignity.
- Assists in admission transfer and dischargeof patient.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to thecharge nurse co-workers physicians and other team members.
- Communicates documents or otherwise reportobservations of patient behavior complaints or physical symptoms to RNs.
- Assists with feeding patients and maintainingfluid balance with technique appropriate for patients age and physicalcondition.
- Provides explanation to patient and familyprior to administering care to patient; answers questions within scope ofpractice. Gives explanations and verbal reassurances consistently to family andvisitors.
- Consults other departments as appropriate toprovide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patients needs maintains agood working relationship within the department as well as with otherdepartments by interacting professionally with co-workers and other healthcareproviders.
- Assist with procedures and performs servicesrequiring technical and manual skills under the direction of an RN.
- Responds to patient in emergency or physicallydistressful situations.
- Manages and operates equipment safely andcorrectly.
- Demonstrates knowledge of disease entities.
- Able to perform treatments and ensures thatmedical and surgical asepsis is carried out during procedures.
- Change bed linens or make beds. Clean andsanitize patient rooms bathrooms examination rooms or other patient areas.
- Responsible for the recording/charting of ADLsvital signs and input & output data of the patients. Meets currentdocumentation standards and policies and completes within shift.
- Ability to perform a blood glucose using the FSglucose machine; able to remove IV Jelco; and able remove a foley catheter allaccording to policy and procedures.
- Assists with turning or repositioning bedriddenpatients and provides physical support to assist patients to perform dailyliving activities such as getting out of bed bathing dressing using thetoilet and standing walking or exercising.
- Collect specimens such as urine feces orsputum.
- Answers the patient call lights intercom andtelephone in a timely and polite manner to determine patients needs.
- Participates in shift change by providing athorough and accurate report to oncoming shift completes bedside handoff andcompletes CNA checklist.
- Communicates ideas for improvement to the unitmanager/charge nurse.
- Assist dietary with cleaning trays andpreparing food according to dietary guidelines.
- Assists patients with completing food orderbased on MD ordered diet.
- Assists dietary team after hours to meet thepatients dietary needs (re-warms and re-plates food for patient meals.)
- Picks up food trays from patient rooms.
- Assists with cleaning all kitchen surfaces aftereach meal service per procedure. Keepsall storerooms neat clean and organized. Restock nourishment rooms and ensuresitems are not expired.

Advanced Orthopedic and SpineCertification Requirements
(CR.1c) As partof the Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification at a minimum the Programdirect-care staff must have eight (8) hours of education specific to theProgram scope initially and at least annually thereafter.
(CR.1e) As partof the Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification staff possess adaptabilityto processes as related to up to date best practices collaboration betweendepartments compliance with protocols/processes communication cooperationand exceptional customer service.
Within 90 daysof hire or if currently employed within 90 days of signing the jobdescription must adhere to:
- Orientation of Advanced Orthopedic and SpineCertification
- In compliance with the Program educationrequirements
- Completed department specific competencies
Regulatory Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Current Certified Nursing AssistantCertification required
- Current BLS certification
- Minimum of one (1) year experience
Language Skills
- Ability to communicate effectively in Englishboth verbally and in writing.
- Basiccomputer knowledge.
Physical Demands
The physicaldemands described here are representative of those that must be met by anemployee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Whileperforming the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to talkand hear. This position is very active and requires repetitive motions standingwalking bending kneeling and stooping all day. The employee must frequently liftor move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
