Job Description

The Database Administrator is a highly skilled member of an enterprise database and system administration (DBA) team who design implement maintain and support Sheridans administrative and academic databases as well as the application system environment. The incumbent installs maintains upgrades and supports Sheridans many database and application server environments and addresses requirements for database and application efficiency security issues and performance issues.
Sheridans ERP applications are running on PeopleSoft in a four-tier architecture. The main database platforms supported are Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server.

What Youll Be Doing

  • Performing a variety of highly technical duties involved in the design maintenance and operation of all database and related application system environments critical to the operation of the Colleges administrative and academic system applications.
  • Reviewing new system initiatives including major application upgrades to determine database and server requirements and meeting with system owners to clarify resource needs including number of users concurrency and system availability.
  • Advising supervisor of significance impact on existing database and application environment and new resource requirements for storage and servers.
  • Installing database and application products including any related tools for web based services and batch processes and related components for the web server the application server and the database server.
  • Developing and maintaining system utilities and procedures for administering the database and application systems including backup and recovery procedures to ensure reliability and availability of the databases and applications.
  • Enforcing policies and procedures to control access to administrative and production database(s).
  • Developing and maintaining policies and procedures to ensure data access integrity and availability when changing the production database.
  • Ensuring the non-production databases and application environments are maintained and available to support the development and testing activities of other IT staff and users through periodic refreshes from the production systems.
  • Applying system patches and release upgrades to the database and application environments. Promotes application changes to the quality assurance and/or production environment.
  • Reviewing technical release documentation relating to system patches and upgrades and advises the application team of the impact of the system changes.
  • Providing specialized technical support for trouble shooting database and application performance issues
  • Proactively monitoring the database and application performance to detect system problems as they arise; trouble-shoots performance issues reported through the Colleges helpdesk; tracks and monitors resolution of all the reported issues.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will also meet the following qualifications:

  • Minimum 3-year diploma/degree in computer science or information technology related field.
  • Minimum of 8-years experience working with information systems is required including a minimum of 5-years of administering relational databases including but not limited to Oracle within a PeopleSoft environment and/or Microsoft SQL Server. (equivalencies to be considered)
  • 34 years PeopleSoft Admin experience (managing the administration configuration and maintenance of the application server; monitoring process schedulers; monitoring the release of patches upgrades and fixes and assessing the impact on the current environment) would be an asset.
  • 2-years minimum development experience working with database technical tools and knowledge of database backup and recovery techniques Peoplesoft Internet architecture SQL Unix Linux and Windows is an asset.
  • Formal certification in Oracle or MS Sql Server database administration is desired.
