Job Description

Terre des Hommes Netherlands is looking for one Junior Technical Advisor: EU Advocacy (Maternity Cover) to support our work on Online Sexual Exploitation of Children. Based in Brussels.

About Terre des Hommes

Terre des Hommes Netherlands aims to protect children by preventing and stopping child exploitation. And by empowering children to make their voices count. Terre des Hommes Netherlands focuses on (Online) Sexual Exploitation of Children Child Labour and Humanitarian Action. For each of these forms of child exploitation Terre des Hommes Netherlands is developing and implementing projects and programmes through local partners mainly in Asia Africa and Europe.



What will you work on:

You will support our European Union (EU) advocacy work as part of the Sexual Exploitation of Children (SEC) Team. As the EU Advocacy Officer you will be responsible for providing specialist expertise in preventing and responding to child exploitation aligned with Terre des Hommes Netherlands (TdH NL) global strategy. The role focuses on EU advocacy targeting both EU policy-makers and private sector actors to catalyze change. This positions objectives include developing expert knowledge supporting TdH NLs Global Programmes and contributing to TdH NLs agenda by engaging in child exploitation prevention initiatives.



Your tasks may include:

  • Drive and implement strategic advocacy goals engage with EU policy makers and international private sector entities and support influencing initiatives across Global Programmes.
  • Carry out desk research in support of policy statements and/or consultation with relevant experts and stakeholders when developing or reviewing policy statements.
  • Represent TdH NL and TDHIF in relevant coalitions and fora focusing on online child safety.
  • Support the Dutch advocacy team where relevant ensuring coordination between the EU and Dutch advocacy work.
  • Act as the subject matter expert on Online Sexual Exploitation of Children and on EU policy-making.
  • Develop position papers policies and guidelines; deliver presentations consult on focal area issues and represent TdH NL in relevant external forums.
  • Support Programme Development Teams (PDTs) by providing insights and resources relevant to the focal area.
  • Consult on programme design providing expert advice and recommendations for child exploitation prevention.
  • Participate in programme reviews offer feedback and help develop strategies that align with TdH NLs child protection and safeguarding goals.



We are looking for a motivated and hands-on EU Advocacy Officer who:

  • Has good oral and written communication skills in English with additional languages (French or Dutch) as an advantage;
  • Masters Degree in social sciences human rights child rights gender studies European studies psychology criminology sociology anthropology international development studies or any other relevant degree;
  • Has knowledge on European institutions and EU policy-making;
  • Has experience (studies or work) with EU advocacy and policy analysis writing and editing;
  • Knowledge of the EU Child Sexual Abuse legislation and relevant digital legislation is preferred;
  • Key areas of expertise should align with core functions related to research and advocacy demonstrating a thorough grasp of child rights and safeguarding practices;
  • Has good analytical skills;
  • Has good organisational skills;
  • Works well independently and in teams self-starter;
  • Is based in Brussels (/- within commuting distance) or willing to relocate at their own expense.
  • Must be legally able to work in the EU.
