TITLE:TRANSPORTATION ROUTING SPECIALIST

BASIC FUNCTION:
Plan schedule manage and coordinate the development of district routes to provide safe efficient timely and economical transportation service for the students of the district. Assist with finding the most efficient ways to route out of boundary students. Supervise routes drivers and associates provides training when needed and interact with district staff to support the goals and objectives of the department. This position requires independent judgment and decision making on a regular basis. The essential functions as shown below represent only the key areas of responsibility; specific position requirements will vary depending on the needs of the district the students and the transportation department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Develop design and coordinate bus routes for district buses using routing software.
2. Maintain database which includes student boundary and transportation information.
3. Communicate with bus drivers school administrators and staff on routing changes
4. Assess changes in zoning and student distribution to recommend route changes buses and/or bus driver to accommodate accordingly; analyzes and evaluates transportation safety issues (ex. construction areas unsafe bus stops or walking paths special education requirements etc.) as it relates to bus route changes.
5. Evaluate and make decisions on special requests (ex. stop locations number of students being transported space available requests and determines services to meet requests).
6. Analyze bus run and routes edit and/or split routes and initiate action to increase or decrease driver time for routing
7. Coordinate with other department staff to ensure that routes and trips are adequately staffed and that equipment is available as required.
8. Supervise employees and participates in hiring process.
9. Monitor arrival and departure times of drivers and associates.
10. Communicate with drivers regarding essential information such as student health concerns routes emergencies and other information as appropriate.
11. Respond to parent and public complaints and address concerns related to student transportation routes and scheduling
12. Assist with other related clerical duties such as photocopying faxing filing and collating.
13. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending conferences and training programs.
14. Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct including the requirements of confidentiality regarding student and personnel information.
15. Evaluate job performance of assigned staff and submit written performance reviews or performance improvement plans.
16. Use database to access student busing information and relay information to drivers staff and public
17. Investigate allegations of misconduct or incompetence and administer appropriate disciplinary action and assist with grievance process.
18. Communicate appropriate time changes with payroll department.
19. Occasionally ride along with drivers to problem-solve any routing concerns.
20. Drive routes to learn the streets in the district to help with routing and mapping changes.
ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (for every DMPS position):
HIRING SPECIFICATIONS:
Required:
1. High School Diploma HiSET or GED
2. Two (2) years of work experience in the area of logistics transportation and/or comparable.
3. Three (3) years of supervisory experience in a fast paced deadline driven environment.
4. Excellent written and verbal communications skills
5. Three (3) years of experience working with computerized databases/applications.
6. Two (2) years of routing experience preferably Versa Trans or comparable.
7. Knowledge of laws codes rules policies and regulations relating to pupil transportation particularly as it applies to routing requirements and procedures.
8. Possess or be eligible to obtain a CDL with appropriate licensing endorsement within 90 days of employment.
9. Three years of experience evaluating staff.
10. Ability to read and navigate mapping software including traffic patterns directions and school locations and boundaries.
Desired:
1. Post High School education or training
2. Knowledge of City of Des Moines.
3. At least five years of experience as a bus driver.
4. Prior school bus or comparable routing experience.
