Description

The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill the position of Maintenance Technician Senior with the Traffic Engineering Division. The incumbent is responsible for performing tasks installation maintenance and repair of traffic signage and signals.

Duties include but are not limited to

  • Performing assigning and maintaining tasks to assistants/ helpers; supervising work to ensure standards are met;
  • Generating work orders maintaining records and work order files;
  • Install repair clean and maintain regulatory wayfinding warning temporary waring and parking signs.
  • Removing installing maintaining all signs signpost and other traffic control devices throughout the City;
  • Performing routine maintenance for assigned equipment;
  • Maintaining and cleaning sign shop equipment facilities exterior yard and regulatory signage properly storing all items and ensuring safe and clean environment;
  • Using post drivers sign making system hand tools;
  • Responsible for operating a forklift maintaining and properly storing equipment tools and signage;
  • Must adhere to established safety guidelines and procedures to minimize accidents and injuries.
  • Performing other related duties as required.

**City of Richmond Public Works employees who work in this class are considered Essential Personnel and will be required to work during declared emergencies and major weather events.**

Qualifications Special Certifications and Licenses

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • Three (3) years of experience based on assignment;
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.

LICENSING CERTIFICATIONS and OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Some positions may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Drivers License within 30 days of hire.
  • Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Drivers License with a satisfactory driving record.
  • If assigned to road maintenance may require Hazmat and Tanker license.

PREFERRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Selected candidate must have a commercial driver license (CDL) or have a commercial driver learners permit and a scheduled appointment with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles to complete any remaining requirements prior to consideration.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:TYPICAL KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: These are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.

Knowledge (some combination of the following):

  • TrafficControl Regulations

    • Understanding of MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) standards.
    • Knowledge of local state and federal road signage regulations.
  • Constructionand Installation Methods

    • Familiarity with tools materials and installation methods for signs (e.g. posts anchors adhesives brackets).
  • OccupationalSafety

    • Knowledge of safety practices related to construction zones signage installation and equipment operation (e.g. PPE requirements fall protection hazard identification).

Skills (some combination of the following):

  • Closing work orders
  • Communicating knowledge of park lands and recreational opportunities to the public effectively
  • Communicating with various internal and external departments
  • Completing administrative supervisory duties and various paperwork
  • Conducting inventory checks
  • Ensuring vehicles are in good working order
  • Excavating underground structures and pipelines
  • Helping employees in skilled trades
  • Maintaining equipment and machinery
  • Managing limited time effectively for the greatest task completion rate
  • Pulling and parking trailers
  • Removing snow when necessary
  • Responding to emergency events
  • Setting up job sites with cones/signs
  • Stocking vehicle with necessary supplies
  • Using radios and phones

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple concurrent tasks with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly talk hear see and perform repetitive motions; frequently climb balance kneel crouch reach stand walk push pull lift; and occasionally stoop crawl finger grasp and feel. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties this classification is considered to be medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally up to 20 pounds of force frequently and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
