We are seeking a Full-Time Permanent Technologist specializing in Industrial Wastewater to join our team at Aurum in Edmonton AB. This role reports directly to the Manager of Environmental Monitoring Compliance & Support.

As a Technologist specializing in Industrial Wastewater you will play a key role in field operations conducting sampling monitoring inspections and assessments to ensure compliance with municipal bylaws and the objectives of the Industrial Monitoring program. Your responsibilities include following established sampling protocols utilizing manual and automatic sampling techniques and ensuring the safe collection documentation and delivery of representative water and wastewater samples to the laboratory. Additionally you will perform routine inspections of hauled wastewater carriers verifying compliance with bylaw requirements and associated documentation
What youd be responsible for
In the role of Technologist Industrial Wastewater you are accountable to the Manager of Environmental Monitoring Compliance & Support. and will have the following key accountabilities (but are not limited to these):
- Provide input to the Compliance Manager on plans directions and maintaining effective relationships with other positions.
- Conduct Safe Work Plans at all worksites ensuring all hazard controls are in place or in use.
- Collect water and wastewater samples from manholes vacuum trucks and designated points using manual and automated techniques per established protocols.
- Perform visual and field-test kit assessments documenting results observations and related data.
- Deliver representative water/wastewater samples to the laboratory for analysis.
- Utilize the following programs:
- POSSE & Excel for data entry and recording
- GeoFIT & DRAINS to locate and assess sampling sites
- Entrapass & C-Cure for billing reports and manifest checks
- Oracle & Outlook for emails timecards and general work functions
- Matrix Gemini for daily sample submissions
- Issue notices for minor bylaw infractions as required. Major infractions are referred to Investigators or City Bylaw Officers and may require assistance.
- Plan and execute a safe efficient daily sample collection route across various sites including off-road locations and private properties under diverse traffic and environmental conditions.
- Perform hauled wastewater inspections at transfer stations including sample collection (manual or automated) field testing data retrieval video footage review manifest verification reporting billing and assisting with site/card access management.
Whats required to be successful
Qualifications experience and behaviours you possess are:
- Completion of a Diploma in Environmental Chemical or Biological Sciences from a recognized post-secondary educational institute.
- Degrees or diplomas from similar programs may also be considered.
- At least one course in Grade 12 Chemistry or Biology from a recognized educational institute is required.
- Demonstratedknowledge of EPCOR Drainage Services and Wastewater Treatment Bylaw 19627 and City of Edmonton Drainage Bylaw 18093.
- At least one year of experience in a role related to environmental chemical or biological sciences.
- Intermediate skill level with MicrosoftOffice(i.e.Outlook Excel) and with data collection and database usage.
- Ability and willingness to perform work in all types of weather during all four seasons frequent entering and exiting of vehicle at a variety of industrial commercial and institutionalcustomerlocations.
- Able to meet the physical demands required of this position which will include physical strength and dexterity to perform medium to heavy work and frequent lifting of materials weighing up to fifty pounds. Clearance on pre-placement medical and drug and alcohol testing may be required.
- Must be able and willing to wear all Personal Protective Equipment.
- Ability to qualify for and maintain an EPCOR drivers permit which requires a valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License
- Limited to 6 demerits or less at date of hire (prior infractions for unsafe driving behaviours will be evaluated and considered for non-selection regardless of current demerits on file).
- A Driver Abstract (5 year commercial type) will be required.
- Drivers with a GDL class may be considered (limited to 3 demerits and pending driving behavior review referenced above).
Preferred Qualifications for the Industrial Wastewater Technologist:
- Extensive knowledge of environmental legislation pollution prevention waste minimization and wastewater treatment and disposal methods.
- Certification as a member of The Association of Science & Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET) ECO Canada or another recognized professional organization.
- Alberta Environment Wastewater Collection Operator Certification.

- Final Wage and Step will be determined at the time of selection and based on a combination of factors as outlined in the CollectiveAgreementfound online.
Hours of work: 40 hours per week (Monday to Friday typically)

- A requirement of working for EPCOR is that you are at least 18 years of age successfully attained a high school diploma (GED or equivalent level of secondary education) and legally entitled to work in Canada. (A copy of a valid work permit may be required.)
- If you are considered for the position clearance on all applicable background checks (which may include criminal identity educational and/or credit) and professional reference checks is required. Some EPCOR positions require an enhanced level of background assessment which is dictated by law. These positions require advanced criminal record checks that must also be conducted from time to time after commencement of employment.
- A technical/practical assessment may be administered during the selection process and this exercise will be used as a part of the selection criterion.
- To meet the physical demands required of some positions candidates must be in good physical condition and willing to work in all weather conditions. Clearance on pre-placement medical and drug and alcohol testing may be required.
