Job Description

Position Objective

The primary functions and responsibilities of Grounds and landscape Technician 3 is to maintain campus grounds parking lots and roadways to ensure a clean safe attractive and accessible outdoor environment for students faculty staff and visitors.

This is position is represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 302

Duties and Tasks (Essential Functions)

Duty: Perform grounds/landscape maintenance with team members and individually.
Tasks include:

  • Organize and plan daily work priorities and activities. May assign work to grounds/landscape crew as needed.
  • May act as liaison between grounds and other departments as requested by Assistant Director.
  • Operate and maintain cleanliness of assigned vehicle(s).
  • Meet and coordinate with vendors and contractors as requested by Assistant Director.
  • Maintain adequate and appropriate supplies for inventory. May order and purchase supplies as needed.
  • Formulate and present recommendations for grounds layout and improvement to the Assistant Director of Operations.
  • Cut and edge grass areas and blow and sweep up clippings.
  • Weed the flower and shrub beds manually and/or using appropriate chemical herbicides and pre-emergent products.
  • Properly prune shrubs and trees to promote proper growth and to avoid rot and disease.
  • Collect and properly dispose of cuttings leaves clippings and trash from all grounds areas as it relates to best environmental practices.
  • Perform proper operator maintenance on hand tools power tools and power equipment used in performing grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Service and maintain the smoking shelters located throughout campus as well as exterior trash receptacles.

Duty: Maintain all hardscapes on campus
Tasks include:
  • Sweep edge restripe perform weed control and fill cracks on sidewalks roadways and pathways.
  • Clear ice snow from designated entrances and sidewalks located around campus and dispense ice melt as needed to ensure a safe environment at all times.

Duty: Remove and replace trees shrubs and other plants as needed to ensure proper landscape and grounds maintenance and repair/maintain campus irrigation systems.
Tasks include:
  • Use hand tools and/or power equipment safely and effectively.
  • Plan the movement or removal of vegetation to ensure proper and necessary tools and supplies are used to perform each task.
  • Repair replace relocate and maintain sprinkler heads valves and water lines to increase efficiency and effectiveness of the irrigation system.
  • Understand the operation and programing of all irrigation system models on campus to repair maintain and improve the efficiency of the irrigation system.

Duty: Assist and support the operations of the maintenance and custodial staff when necessary.
Tasks include:
  • Assist the maintenance and/or custodial staff as needed.

Duty: Attend meetings trainings and professional development activities.
Tasks include:
  • Attend Operations trainings as needed.
  • Serve on selection committees for staff hiring as requested by Assistant Director.
  • Complete mandatory online and other trainings as required by Washington State and /or the College using a computer and various computer training programs.
  • Assist the Operations team members as needed with work activities that promote a safe campus environment.
  • Attend and actively participate in department meetings as required.
  • Submit Time and leave Report (TLR) in a timely manner.
  • Understand maintain knowledge about any/all chemicals used in grounds maintenance and landscape.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of two years of successful working experience in a landscape operation.
  • Able to read write and speak English fluently (for safety reasons).
  • The ability to contribute to the colleges commitment to diversity by fostering a climate of multicultural understanding and appreciation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in a Landscape Construction Grounds Maintenance and Irrigation Technology.
  • Current Public Operators Pesticide License for weed insect and disease control.
