Job Summary:
The University of Colorado School of Medicine invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. This is an exceptional opportunity for a visionary and action-oriented leader to drive forward one of the nations top departments known for its strengths in clinical excellence federal and industry-funded research innovation and education.
The Chair reports directly to the Dean of the School of Medicine and serves as the senior executive leader for the Department. The ideal candidate will bring a track record of excellence in: strategic development of people and organizations team and organizational leadership collaborative management and execution and benefactor engagement; and national recognition for academic accomplishments such as via tenure in emergency medicine and healthcare innovation federally funded independent research and education. The ideal candidate will be a practicing emergency physician with fellowship training and a record of clinical excellence.
The Chair will be responsible for overseeing and maintaining excellence in the Departments clinical education and research programs in collaboration with the leadership of the School of Medicine and its clinical affiliates University of Colorado Medicine (CU Medicine) and University of Colorado Health (UCHealth). The position requires excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to bring together teams to advance the common goals of the Department and the institution. The successful candidate will be a strong collaborative leader with a proven track record of administration education and research. Candidates should also have a keen understanding of the complexities of an academic Department of Emergency Medicine and the ability to lead the further growth and development of the Department in all missions.
The Department Chair is expected to work collegially with other chairs and center directors at the School of Medicine and with colleagues at its clinical affiliates which include UCHealth Childrens Hospital Colorado and Denver Health.
Key Responsibilities:
The Chair will lead the clinical educational and research programs of the Department of Emergency Medicine with an emphasis on building excellence and collaboration within the School of Medicine and with our broad group of partners. The Departments Steering Committee provides guidance and support to the Chair on Departmental issues and planning. The Chair will:
- Define the mission and establish the strategic direction for the Department in collaboration with the leadership of the University of Colorado School of Medicine and its affiliates.
- Ensure the necessary financial and human resources are available to support the clinical educational and research missions of the University.
- Ensure a state-of-the-art education and advanced training of medical students graduate students residents clinical fellows and postdoctoral fellows.
- Work with the Vice Chair of Research to continue to develop the Departments research portfolio and clinical trials to determine the priorities of the Department and support principal investigators and other faculty in efforts to secure extramural funding.
- Work in partnership with the Director of Finance to monitor the Departments fiscal management determine the best use of funds per strategic direction and build up clinical reserves and philanthropy to ensure resources for future projects recruitments and Departmental needs.
- Recruit hire develop and retain outstanding faculty. Address system-level factors adversely impacting faculty well-being.
- Ensure an atmosphere of support opportunity and professional advancement
- Be a role model and exemplar for ethical compliance.
- Demand the highest standards of professional conduct throughout the Department.
- Devise a work ethic framework that is productive and respectful of staff well-being.
- Work collaboratively with leaders of the School of Medicine and the Anschutz Medical Campus including fellow chairs administrators faculty and staff.
- Reinforce campus-wide initiatives to support translational research.
- Have a vision aligned with the strategic plan of the University of Colorado School of Medicine UCHealth and the Anschutz Medical Campus.
- Serve on the School of Medicine Executive Committee and on the board of University of Colorado Medicine which is a 501(c)(3) corporation that provides practice and business management services for nearly 3000 faculty physicians and advanced practice providers of the School of Medicine.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the Universitys good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
- Doctorate degree (MD/DO) with board certification in Emergency Medicine or related field
- Strong track record of professional accomplishments on a national and international scale with a strong focus on clinical success education and research meeting the requirements for a faculty appointment at the Professor level.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated capability across the spectrum of individual scholarship collaborative academic leadership clinical and research program development educational excellence successful faculty recruitment and retention and community engagement and will have designed implemented and integrated effective programs across complex organizations.
- Ability to build strong relationships with others in an environment where the medical school and the clinical system are partners and where the Department of Emergency Medicine fulfills expectations that it will be a leader within the overall institution.
- Previous experience as a division chief vice chair or chair of emergency medicine who has developed academic leaders mentored and developed junior faculty and identified and recruited students trainees staff and faculty.
