Technical Officer - Archaeological Science

About the position

This position is required to work as part of the Facilities and Technical Services team which supports teaching and research activities. This role will work closely with the Archaeology discipline within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and will provide a broad range of technical administration and facilities support services to assist staff and students to achieve teaching learning and research outcomes.

Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Maintain the teaching and research (as resources allow) facilities as clean safe work environments in accordance with appropriate legislation and University policy and guidelines.
  • Test calibrate and maintain equipment as required.
  • Assist with the training and operation of equipment.
  • Provide / prepare materials and resources for undergraduate practical classes.
  • In consultation with academic staff provide advice and assistance in the ordering of laboratory consumables and/or equipment.
  • Carry out other duties supporting FTS roles on campus as required (e.g. cross-team support) where responsibilities permit and as directed by the positions supervisor.

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position you will have;

  • Demonstrated experience in the operation and/or maintenance of laboratories and/or a willingness to learn particularly archaeomagnetic and/or palynology and/or soil science laboratories including preparedness to be trained in and adhere to La Trobe Position Description People and Culture Last updated March 2025 safety protocols for working with hydrofluoric acid (HF).
  • Ability to train staff and students in the use of laboratory equipment.
  • Understanding and demonstrated experience of Health & Safety regulations and procedures.
  • Developed written and verbal communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills especially the capacity to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders both within the university and external to the university.
