The Clinical PSYD Program in San Diego follows a Practitioner-Scholar model that emphasizes the applications of theory and research to clinical practice. The program develops competent professional health-care psychologists skilled in delivering a variety of clinical services to diverse populations in varied settings. The programs most distinctive component is its dual emphasis on clinical expertise and clinical scholarship. Students take courses in a wide range of subjects including statistics theories of personality psychological assessment multicultural issues and psychological practice. Students may follow their own clinical interests and further their individual career goals by selecting a specialized series of courses research and field placements related to a particular area of practice.

PSY85120: Supervision and Consultation Seminar and PSY85130 Supervision Lab

This seminar and accompanying lab is offered to advanced graduate students in Clinical Psychology who have already completed some applied training experiences (i.e. practica /internship experiences). The primary purposes of the seminar are to provide students with a substantial knowledge base regarding the literature roles and skills involved in clinical supervision clinical teaching and consultation as well as with opportunities to apply this knowledge and skill in supervised supervision of first-year practicum students.

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:

• Identify the aspects of a competency-based approach to supervision.

• Apply a problem-solving model to complex supervisory dilemmas.

• Understand the differing roles of supervisor consultant and teacher.

• Analyze theories and evidence-based models of supervision and consultation.

• Describe the levels of development of a supervisee and give examples of supervisory behaviors at each level.

• Identify assessment tools that are relevant to measuring process and outcomes for effective supervision consultation and teaching.

• Describe the relationship among contract competency-based assessment and evaluation in supervision.

• Relate aspects of competence informed consent due process and multiple relationships to risk management in supervisory practice.

• Recognize ones own attitudes about the various social and systemic forces that affect individuals based on age class disability gender race and ethnicity gender identity and sexual orientation and religion and spirituality and to understand concepts of power and privilege as they apply to interventions with populations disproportionately affected by these issues.

• Examine the effects of social and systemic forces based on age class disability gender race and ethnicity gender identity and sexual orientation and religion and spirituality on effective supervision consultation and teaching.

• Apply research ethical principles and relevant law to the practice of these three roles.

• Discuss strategies to decrease risk of burnout and to increase career-enhancement activities.
  

PSY85120: Supervision and Consultation Seminar and PSY85130 Supervision Lab

Through a variety of methods and activities students will be encouraged to focus on their own values and cultural orientations to become aware of stereotypes address prejudices and develop the skills to relate with different kinds of people through their clinical practice. Students will gain knowledge of the literature (i.e. theory research and practice) and major issues in the field of multicultural psychology. Students will participate in small and large group discussions and activities to clarify the role of cultural diversity in their personal and professional development as psychologists.

Upon successful completion of this course students will

• assess the impact that systems of race/ethnicity gender age SES religion sexual identity disability etc. can have on the client and counseling process.

• understand the significance of cultural diversity issues as an integral component of a psychologists ethical and professional responsibilities and ongoing professional development.
• develop an awareness of their (a) own cultural origins and (b) biases stereotypes and assumptions and how these can interfere with their ability to be an effective counselor including in-class experiential activities.
• develop an understanding and appreciation of the role that culture and diversity play relative to the growth development and functioning of the client.
• develop knowledge sensitivity and skills necessary to work effectively with culturally diverse clients.

Position Summary:

Adjunct Faculty are scholars and professionals who teach in their area(s) of specialization and expertise. The primary affiliation of adjunct faculty is not with the university.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Facilitating Classroom and Distance/Distributed Learning.

• Course and syllabus preparation.

• Class curriculum coordination and planning.

• Assessment and evaluation of learners.

• Mentoring and advising students.

• Holding office hours and meeting with students.

• Research/scholarship mentoring and supervision.

Skills:

• Proficient computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.

• The ability to work independently and be self-motivated.

• High level of accuracy and attention to detail and the ability to problem solve.

• The ability to explain complex requirements in clear and concise terms.

• The ability to be flexible with workflow to meet the needs of the department and students and to manage multiple tasks per required deadlines.

• The drive to encourage direct hold accountable and guide candidates toward task completion.

• Must demonstrate the ability to work as an effective team member and develop trusting relationships with students and Alliant employees as well as the Registrars Office and various academic departments.

• Culturally humble and ability to communicate and interact effectively with diverse people.

• Ability to exercise discretion and tact in all interpersonal interactions and to maintain confidentiality.

Starting Salary: $46 hourly.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Doctoral degree in Psychology (PsyD or PhD) from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Appropriate experience in the areas(s) of specialization and expertise.

Supervisory Responsibility:

Direct Reports: Possible student teaching assistant

Indirect Reports: None.

Office Location: San Diego Campus

Work Hours: Standard office hours occasional evenings or weekends may be required depending upon course schedule.

Travel: None.
