Job Summary

Required Education: Masters Degree in Physics Health Medical Radiation Physics or related fieldAND:

  • 12 months experience in radiation safety compliance.

Substitution/Equivalency: Will accept 84 months total experience to meet the qualifications for a Radiation Safety Officer at a medical institution as specified by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Skills:

  • Broad technical knowledge in the physics and biology of radiation.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the applicable regulations.
  • Effective interpersonal and management skills.
  • Fulfillment of requirements as a Radiation Safety Officer required by the State of Oklahoma or U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission as applicable.

Certifications: Board certification by the American Board of Health Physics American Board of Radiology American Board of Nuclear Medicine American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine or the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties in Nuclear Pharmacyor have 200 hours of classroom and laboratory hours of training and experience in radiation physics and instrumentation radiation protection mathematics pertaining to the use and measurement of radioactivity radiation biology and radiopharmaceutical chemistry and one year of full time experience as a radiation safety technologist under the supervision of the individual identified as the Radiation Safety Officer on a Commission or Agreement State license that authorizes the medical use of byproduct material.

Responsible for all requirements of the Radiation Safety Officer in his absence. Under the direction of the Radiation Safety Officer participates in all aspects of radiation safety at the University of Oklahoma including Norman University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and contracts with outside affiliated institutions as authorized by the University of Oklahomas Director of Compliance. Develops implements and audits policies and procedures to ensure the safe and compliant use of radioactive materials and radiation producing devices.

Duties:

  • Serves as the Assistant Director for Radiation Safety for all University of Oklahoma campuses and for affiliated institutions.Develops policies and procedures in collaboration with the Radiation Safety Committee to ensure the safety of personnel and facilities that relate to the installation operation and maintenance of devices that produce ionizing radiation; manages regulatory inspections pertaining to the use of radiation and radioactive materials.
  • Manages regulatory inspections and interacts with regulators on technical and compliance issues.
  • Maintains radioactive materials licenses and writes new license applications renewals and amendments as necessary; determines that all federal state and local regulations related to ionizing radiation are followed; evaluates requests to use radioactive materials radiation producing equipment and radioisotope purchases to ensure compliance with applicable policies and regulations; performs radiation surveys and inspections of facilities where radioactive material or radiation producing equipment is utilized.
  • Provides and conducts in-service education programs related to radiation safety; ensures that personnel monitoring equipment is available and used where required.
  • Provides emergency response relating to accidents that involve radioactive materials; supervises the collection processing storage and disposal of radioactive waste; maintains records and documents on projects and personnel approvals inspections waste disposal and emergencies involving radioactive materials as required by applicable regulatory agencies; develops and submits periodic reports to various regulatory agencies as required; performs and/or supervises the measurement inspection and calibration of all radiation surveying equipment and maintains necessary records.
  • Provides technical advice and assistance to physicians and investigators regarding the use of ionizing radiation the associated risks and related safety requirements; serves as the Controlled Substances Officer; in collaboration with the public information officer and if requested by management represents the institution pertaining to the release of information about institutional radiation safety.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned to successfully fulfill the functions of the position.
