Job Description

Required Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma or equivalent and 5 years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience supervising or managing custodial or facilities staff in a large-scale 24/7 residential or similar environment (housing education healthcare or similar)
- Experience managing budgets or purchasing for custodial or facilities operations
- Experience coordinating or supporting operational transitions such as move-in/move-out periods summer conferences or academic breaks
- Knowledge of safety standards and regulatory compliance relevant to custodial operations (OSHA EPA IOSH)

Job Description:

Lead the team behind the clean safe and welcoming environments where students live and thrive. Iowa State Universitys Department of Residence is seeking a Manager Custodial Services to oversee custodial operations with a focus on safety quality transparency and customer satisfaction. Youll supervise over 90 full-time staff and supervisors while guiding the strategic direction of service delivery across residence halls and apartments.

This role plays a critical part in delivering daily service excellence by guiding operational decisions shaping cleaning standards and leading a large dedicated team that supports over 10000 students throughout the academic year and summer conference season. What Youll Do

  • Lead custodial services using modern facilities management techniques analyzing operations to improve service delivery and uphold cleaning standards for a 24/7 living environment.

  • Supervise custodial supervisors staff and student workers; manage hiring training performance evaluations corrective actions and quality inspections.

  • Deploy staffing and coordinate with Facilities Maintenance for peak demand periods including on-call after-hours support.

  • Plan and oversee custodial projects monitor building conditions and manage purchasing and budgets.

  • Ensure workplace safety and compliance with protocols while collaborating with campus and Residence Life staff to meet operational and event needs.

  • Stay updated on industry trends engage with peers and promote best practices across custodial services.

Our custodial team plays a crucial role in making campus housing feel like home. Example of Duties

  • Oversees the purchases of all supplies and equipment for custodial services.

  • Directs and manages the daily business operations of the department.

  • Oversees facilities and building condition and plans custodial projects.

  • Has accountability for the performance and results of a team.

  • Leads direct reports and provides technical guidance to employees colleagues and/or customers.

  • Supervises a large custodial staff.


Level Guidelines

  • Aware of key annual objectives of department or work unit

  • Understands linkage between daily activities and achievement of annual objectives of department/work unit and explains to direct reports

  • Focus on ISUs mission and meeting department or work unit goals

  • Supervises a small department or work team within the Department of Residence.

  • Often is a working supervisor with direct previous experience performing work of those supervised

  • Has full management responsibility for direct reports specifically the authority to hire fire and counsel; may share part of responsibility with higher level management

  • Requests approval for financial actions beyond a limited scope per policy
