REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Reports to Director of Pharmacy Pharmacy Technician Supervisor and/or Operational Pharmacist Supervisor. This role does not support direct reports.

POSITION SUMMARY

Pharmacy technician specialists work primarily in their area of expertise but will also assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications maintaing the drug inventory and maintaining patient records. Pharmacy technician specialists work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Pharmacy technician specialists employees actively participate in the creation of an environment that fosters patient family physician and employee satisfaction.

CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Tasks are assigned according to Ohio or Michigan Board of Pharmacy restrictions as noted in OAC 4729:3-3-01 and Public Health Code 333.17739 and are noted below in specific accountabilities

INPATIENT TECHNICIAN SPECIALIST ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Tasks and projects as per focus area job description addendum.
• Accepting new written faxed or electronic prescription orders from a prescriber or a prescribers agent.
• Accepting new verbal prescription orders including refill authorizations for non-controlled drugs from a prescriber or a prescribers agent.
• Entering information into and retrieving information from the electronic record or patient profile.
• Preparing and affixing labels.
• Stocking dangerous drugs and retrieving those drugs from inventory.
• Counting and pouring dangerous drugs into containers.
• Placing dangerous drugs into containers prior to dispensing by a pharmacist.
• Performing non-sterile drug compounding after receiving required additional site specific training.

• Performing sterile drug compounding after receiving required additional site specific training.
• Performing sterile compounding of hazardous drugs after receiving additional site specific training.
• Stocking automated drug dispensing units floor stock and crash carts at a location licensed as a terminal distributor of dangerous drugs.
• Participates in training of new employees or new workflows in area of expertise as assigned.
• Other duties as assigned

RETAIL TECHNICIAN SPECIALIST ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Accepting new written faxed or electronic prescription orders from a prescriber or a prescribers agent.
• Accepting new verbal prescription orders including refill authorizations for non-controlled drugs from a prescriber or a prescribers agent.
• Entering information into and retrieving information from the electronic record or patient profile.
• Preparing and affixing labels.
• Stocking dangerous drugs and retrieving those drugs from inventory.
• Counting and pouring dangerous drugs into containers.
• Placing dangerous drugs into containers prior to dispensing by a pharmacist.
• Performing non-sterile drug compounding after receiving required additional site specific training.
• Packaging and selling a dangerous drug to a patient or patient representative.
• Sending or receiving electronic prescriptions between pharmacies accessing the same prescription records in a centralized database or pharmacy computers linked in any other manner.
• Requesting refill authorizations for dangerous drugs froma prescriber or prescribers agent so long as there is no change from the original prescription (OH specific guideline).
• Sending or receiving copies of non-controlled prescriptions (i.e. prescription transfers).
• Contacting a prescriber or prescribers agent to obtain clarification for a prescription order if the clarification does not require the exercise of professional judgment/interpretation or drug regimen review.
• Performing diagnotics laboratory testing pursuant to rule 4729:3-:3-05 (OH specific guideline)
• Administering immunizations per physician protocol to patient 5 yrs old or older without a prescription (OH) or 3 yrs old or older (MI)
• Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent 18 years of age.

Skills: Advanced knowledge in area of expertise

Years of Experience: 5 years of pertinent experience

License:

• • OHIO: Active Ohio Board of Pharmacy Certified Technician License OR
  • Ohio Board of Pharmacy Intern License and P4 status in schooling
  • MICHIGAN: Active Michigan Board of Pharmacy Technician License OR
  • Michigan Board of Pharmacy Intern license and P4 status in schooling

Certification:

1. Certified Pharmacy Technician required (either PTCB or ExCPT (NHA) exam permitted) unless has intern license
2. Achievement of CPhT-Adv certification through PTCB unless has intern license

WORKING CONDITIONS

Personal Protective Equipment: Will wear appropriate PPE when compounding nonsterile sterile and hazardous products

Physical Demands: Must be able to lift materials up to 50 pounds. Non-material handling of continuous sitting and reachingstandingsquatting kneeling walking and stairs. Frequent manual manipulations that may affect hands wrists elbows and shoulders. Must be able to move about and between workstations
