The Work You Will Do:
Traffic Design Engineer II
Director of Production/Design/Roadway Design
This position will manage the development of traffic design plans including their signing and sealing in compliance with FDOT Standards. It will also provide technical expertise support to other FDOT Units to help create a well-structured transportation network that promotes economic growth while striving to reduce congestion and fatalities.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
Supervises employees by communicating regularly motivating training evaluating planning and directing employees work. Motivates and evaluates employees on the performance of their duties. Develops procedural and technical training. Participates in applicant selection and hiring process. Provides employee orientation training counseling and disciplinary actions and prepares employee performance evaluations. Performs supervisory and management roles related to highly technical work in Traffic Design production including traffic plans production project management value engineering quality control plans review and scope development. Supervises the assigned Traffic Design staff and is engaged in the preparation and review of traffic design contract plans contract documentation and computations to ensure that these documents are produced in compliance with current criteria safety standards economic feasibility and sound engineering judgment. Supervises staff in the assembly of traffic design plans signing and pavement marking signalization and lighting plan packages scopes of work design exceptions and variations and utility conflict reports to be used in phase reviews and other submittals on designated projects. Supervises personnel involved in quality control value engineering drafting/plans preparation and scope development.
Provides guidance and extensive knowledge of all applicable design standards and traffic plans design criteria. Performs independently in the development and preparation of detailed component plans and specifications for signing and pavement markings signalization Lighting and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Plans. Includes the design of signal head assemblies railroad preemptions signal system layouts No Passing Zone Studies (NPZ) and overhead and ground-mounted signs with the use of utility conflict reports in phase reviews. Assists engineers and designers in plans preparation using computer aided drafting and design (CADD).
Oversees designers and prepares highway signing and pavement marking signalization and lighting component plans. Utilizes current Department highway design signing and pavement marking signalization Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and lighting software standards and criteria. Performs Quality Assurance/Control reviews as required to ensure plans have been developed in accordance with appropriate design criteria policy and procedures.
Coordinates all activities required to design traffic control devices traffic signal systems lighting and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) systems. Responsible for acquiring all necessary information needed to select acceptable and economically feasible solutions and identifies potential problems as well as providing solutions to those problems. Obtains input pertinent to local requirements and ordinances from municipalities and other governmental agencies. Assists in field reviews and field evaluation data collection Local Agency Program (LAP) reviews and customer service request documentation.
Guides and monitors the work of designers within Traffic Design. Coordinate tasks accordingly to distribute workload within Traffic Design. Provides training to the Office of Design in the design and development of complex signing and pavement marking signalization lighting and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) plans. Provides designers with guidance in the designing of overhead guide signs and ground mounted signs using appropriate computer software. Trains Design staff in the design of Traffic Management Sites and multi-post signs. Represents supervisor concerning design related issues as needed and provides guidance.
Provides technical knowledge and expertise of the design process as a senior member in a design group to in-house and consultant designers. Guides and directs junior engineers in the completion of engineering assignments related to design processes criteria evaluation scope development and accurate estimate creation. Reviews shop drawings thoroughly and maintains shop drawing files. Signs and seals plans and documents as needed. Serves on Technical Review Committee (TRC) in consultant acquisition and Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for consultant design bid build design/build projects and alternative contracting. Assists in the development of scope of services and staff hours negotiations.
Licensure/Registration/Certification:
Registration as a Professional Engineer in accordance with Chapter 471 Florida Statutes.
