Job Description

Job Title: Veterinary Technician

Position Summary:

The Veterinary Technician supports the integrity of Arizona horse racing by ensuring proper sample collection and compliance with state laws and Racing Commission regulations. This role assists with test barn operations veterinary inspections and investigative procedures to uphold equine welfare and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect and process blood urine and hair samples from racehorses while maintaining chain of custody.

  • Package document and ship samples securely to the testing lab.

  • Maintain a clean and organized lab/test barn area.

  • Record veterinary exams and assist with pre-race inspections and injury reviews.

  • Enforce Arizona Revised Statutes 5-105(A) and Racing Commission rules.

  • Assist with split sample processing and barn inspections.

  • Communicate with trainers veterinarians and owners regarding veterinary procedures and regulatory compliance.

  • Notify trainers when horses are placed on the vet list and respond to related inquiries.

Qualifications:

  • Certified Veterinary Technician licensed by the Arizona State Board of Veterinary Medicine.

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

  • Experience handling and working with horses is required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Arizona horse racing laws and Racing Commission regulations

  • Veterinary practices and horse anatomy

  • Track operations equine breeds and identification techniques

Skills in:

  • Sample handling documentation and maintaining chain of custody

  • Handling and identifying racehorses using markings tattoos and paperwork

  • Observing and reporting rule violations accurately and diplomatically

Abilities to:

  • Communicate clearly and professionally (verbal and written)

  • Adapt to changing assignments and prioritize tasks

  • Work independently and as part of a team

  • Maintain composure around excitable animals

  • Build positive relationships with staff and stakeholders
